I would be interested in this old thread, i have just bought a golf with the same. Any new news on this?

you could look up youtube and how to align a vw gearbox cable

When you take off the plastic lugs on the cables, you may have to gently prise them off the threaded cable, clean with wire brush a grease up before adjusting

It might be a cheap fix and better than taking your gearbox out

Go back up the forum "tree" links to Volkswagen and then into the Touran - Sharan - Caravanelle section link. Open a New Thread when you are there. Alternatively a moderator may move your original post from the B6 Passat section to the correct forum section.

change the oil and go to VW Parts Dept to get the right oil specs

could also look at youtube in how to realign the gearbox rods for changing gear

i have been to a mechanic and he thinks its not the case of the cable to adjust as it doesnt crunch it goes smothly into all gears and nothing is stiff they said it could most likely sybcroniser or the presure plate bearing but they not 100% ssure

You said in your post #23 the noise is worst when you lift off the accelerator, ie. on the overrun in 5th gear, this is unlikely to be the clutch release 'pressure plate' bearing or syncro hub. You probably have a worn shaft bearing in the gearbox, you could try changing the oil and using an additive which might quieten it a bit, but long term it looks like a replacement box or overhaul.
