Hi I am looking into buying VCDS as I have several VW's in my close friends and family and it would really benefit me as they all come to me with their problems.

in the range of vehicles there is:
    2000 passat TDi
    2000 6N2 polo gti
    2005 Bora TDi
    2007 Polo 1.2
    2008 Fox 1.4
    2010 Polo 1.2
    and my
    2008 Passat Sport.

what would I need to get it to work with all of these cars?

Also I have seen you can get VCDS lite and use a 3rd party cable, would this be a good starting point to get used to VCDS and does anyone know where to get these cables.

    Thanks

    Kev
2008 Passat Sport 170 TDi - BI-Xenons, leather (front and rear heated seats), RCD 500 with Dynaudio, front fogs.

The only thing that will work with all of your cars is genuine VCDS from ross-tech. You can buy the dongle from ilexa or gendan. You download the software from ross-tech although they may supply you with a current disc to start you off. Don't buy from anyone offering VCDS cheap. That will be a pirate copy.

VCDS lite will only work on your 2000 year cars as it doesn't work after 2005. A 3rd party cable for VCDS lite can be bought on ebay. You can't buy a 3rd party genuine full VCDS dongle.

Yes, the HEX style interface will work with all of the cars you listed and in general will work with all VAG cars from '95 through 2011 model years with the exception of the Crafter and the Routan - both products of other OEs and rebadged. Ross-Tech is working to add Crafter support. No time frame announced. The Routan is a Chrysler and don't know that we will ever add it to our capabilities.

Borakey, have you purchased yet? I have also been thinking of purchasing VCDS. I have an 57 plated A6, and relatives a 09 VRS Octavia, 54 bora and a 57 seat leon so like you it would be a useful buy. What kit did you get in the end and where from? How much approx to get the right kit? Is it easy to use?

I used VCDS today for the very first time on my Golf GTD. I was a bit apprehensive at first, but once I figured out that I should put the ignition on(!) it was very easy. Ensure the car is fully unlocked, plug the cable in and turn on the ignition. You can then run the VDCS program (download from http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/download/current.html) and start using it properly. The most difficult bit was finding exactly where to plug the cable in on the car.

I bought the HEX-USB+CAN cable from here:

    http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCHU.html

Yes, it's expensive, but do you really want to risk your lovely expensive car (or someone else's pride and joy) with a potentially dodgy third party cable? I didn't, so I went with the genuine cable, and I'm glad I did, as VCDS really is an excellent piece of software.

Thanks for the feed back. Would your kit do my car? If so what do I need and how much? I've had a look and quotes of £262.95 from Gendan are mentioned and I can't find a price from Ilexa but is that it or do I need more kit?

The hex-can cable will work on your cars. Cost is more or less the same from Ilexa or Gendan. You don't need to buy anything else. Don't be tempted by Chinese fakes that are cheaper.
