I replace the gaiter on My Passat last week. I bought the full gear knob and gaiter from VW.

Unclip the gaiter at the bottom, the back comes out first. Lift the gaiter up as far as possible and you will see a metal clip. Using a small screw driver or long nosed pliers open the clip so the gear knob can be lifted off. Replace it with the new one using the pliers to squeeze the clip tight then clip the gaiter in at the front first then the back.

    Hope this helps.

I read in an earlier post that in order to seperate the gaiter from the gear knob you had to break the metal collar or clip.

can the gaiter be seperated from the gear knob without breaking the collar or clip?

    thanks
