    Hi All
Brand new to this forum as only had my A4 Cab a week tomorrow. Loving it, except that yesterday the ECS light came on. Did a bit of a search here, but most posts seem to be about TDi's, mine's a 1.8T. Had a similar issue a few years ago with a Passat 1.8T, and my memory is that it took many visits to a main dealer to solve, and they wanted £100 every time they attached a diagnostic tool.
    Any advice?
    Thanks all.

    a fault scan will help.
look in the vagcom section for a member in your area to scan the car.,

Was it flashing or solid, if it was flashing, and the engine is very lumpy, you might have a knackered ignition coil, £30 from Audi

Hi. Took it back today to Bullitt cars in Mill Hill, from whence it came, and it appears not to be serious; they've reset and the light not coming on again...yet. Good friendly and quick service from Mark and the guys.

They aren't Audi specialists by any means, but seem to knock out decent interesting cars at fair prices.

Unfortunately they have only reset the ECU. Did they tell you what the fault code was before resetting ?? it comes on for a reason

Over time your fuel trim (idle and multiplative) will change either lean or rich and when they reach a certain threshold the emissions light will come back on

If you are friendly with them get them to look at measuring block 32 on your engine there will be 2 percentages each should be no more than say 5% plus or minus. This will show how lean or rich the engine is running, the emissions light comes on after your ECU decides that too much air is entering the engine or not enough fuel (lean) or not enough air or too much fuel (rich)

If you have a tiny hole in a pipe it will take a while, sometimes upto 100 miles before the ECU decides to put the light on

When the car is at idle is it jumpy ??

yes, they gave me the print-out. it says:
    CODE 001:
P0130 02 Sensor circuit, Bank 1 - sensor 1: Malfunction. Short circuit to another valve

    CODE 002:
16804 P0420 Catalyst system, bank 1: efficiency below threshold
    sporadic

    no, not jumpy at idle.

To be fair to them they said if it comes on again they will fix.

well, yesterday I was going to post that they installed a new lambda sensor and all was well. In fact, I was thinking this as I drove into work when the bl**dy thing came on again. anyway, apparently there is a 2nd lambda sensor which they say they will now replace.

Fortunately this is all under warranty.

Bullitt have ordered the 2nd sensor and will fit next week. Hopefully will solve the problem.
