We've just taken delivery of our new A6 Avant and I love it with one exception. When the car's wet and we open the tailgate, water pours out of the sides of the channel under the rear window and (usually) splashes into the boot on one side or the other depending on the wind direction.

This seems like such a poor part of the design that I can't be the only person who finds this annoying; yet a search of these forums gives no results.

Does anybody else experience this? Has anybody found a solution?

I'm picking up my new a6 avant on Friday, I was in a colleagues new a4 avant today and I got wet after he opened the boot to get my laptop so it's probably across the whole range...

My car is a saloon, so I can't comment about the A6 Avant doing this, but can confirm that Mrs F's TT Coupe has exactly the same problem. We invested in a boot liner for it, mostly to keep the carpets dry.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll try channeling the water with some tape and see whether it helps. If I do then I'll post photos.

my 2008 avant also does this. I don't what you intend to tape but when I complained at dealer I was told the run-off is designed like that to avoid water accumulation under rear window. And not to tape it up. Their solution was to tell me to lift tailgate only slightly at first to allow water to hit drain channel. Which doesn't really work to be honest, you still get water inside.

It's not good, but my mate's Mondeo hatch does same thing - for same reason.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting that the dealer told you that because the design has the opposite effect to what they claim. My C5 A6 Avant didn't have the problem.

My plan is to put clear tape down the side of the rear window glass to bridge the gap between the glass and the metal and form a thin channel down which water can run towards the hinges. Now that my dealer has fixed the problem I've had with a leaking tailgate I can hopefully put the tape on without it getting disturbed by their technicians.

When I get chance I'll post a photo to show what I mean.

That would be great - I'm definitely interested (if it works)

Spurred on by your reply I've just had a quick play.

The photos below show where I've roughly added some sellotape. (This is not the final solution, obviously!) I've put a strip down the side of the tailgate to bridge the gap between the glass and the metal, and it forms a thin channel down which water can run to the hinge area.

A quick test with water in the channel under the window gives mixed results. If I open the boot slowly the water does indeed run down this channel without any drips at all but if I open the boot quickly the volume of water overwhelms the narrow channel and splashes out of the side more messily than it did before. I'll leave the tape installed on this side and wait for the next rainy day.

The third photo shows how the tape looks from the outside. It's not beautiful but it's not particularly noticeable. With better tape more carefully applied it would probably look much neater.

Tried this at weekend and its definitely better when opening slowly than not having it. I used black tape instead of selly and mine being a black car makes it hardly noticable even when tailgate open. cheers for the pics without them I realise I didn't know what you had in mind.

Good news. Thanks for posting your feedback.

What sort of tape did you use? It needs to be waterproof but also not deteriorate into a sticky mess if it gets hot/cold. I dislike electrical tape because of its stickiness even though it'd be the perfect width and flexibility. Maybe some sort of vinyl?
