    hi guys,

my steering is juddering when braking over speeds of 30, had new pads fitted 2 months ago and the dics were fine. Been to garage today and the mechanic checked them and he says the discs and pads are fine, any ideas????

also had a oil level sensor fault flash when you initially start the car, but goes away after 30 seconds, so had a oil change today as advised by mechanic but its still there, any ideas???

    thanks

Not sure on your oil level sensor but the juddering steering wheel when breaking, normally means warped disks or worn bushes.

if you break gently, can you feel the peddle moving or gently pulseing?

Might be a idea to get the front wheels off the ground (ramp or jack and axle stand. I'd opt for the ramp option) and give them a wobble at the 12-6 postion and the 3-9 postion. see if there is any excesive movement.

the mechanic checked the discs and he said they are still as new and seem fine. dont think the pedal moves at all when braking, but will re check.

there is no movement in the pedal, the steering just shakes quite badly if you brake over 30mph, it shakes worse when you going faster...

    any ideas???

You need to have a disc run out check which is done with a dial gauge. If the discs are running out by more than 0.03-mm, they will have to be replaced. If they are warped, the hubs must be checked before fitting new discs or it will just happen again, this is a very common problem on the Golf 4 platform. Cheap pattern discs are especially prone to this problem and I have seen it caused by corrosion behind the discs and even by warped wheels. Over tightening the wheel bolts with an air gun can cause the hub to distort around the bolt holes.

cheers crasher, had new pads fitted about 2500 miles ago, the discs were put on before, so not sure, but will get the mechanic to check this, its done over 100k so the hub could be damaged

    just to update,

was driving the car last night and it started making a grinding noise under the bonnet at first i thought the underneath cover had moved and was causing it but today after further investigation, the mechanic showed me the gearbox mounts/fittings have broke causing this grinding noise, he also thinks i will need a new gearbox!!!

but im hoping i dont as the gearbox was fine and still selects each gear without any issues except this grinding noise... any ideas???

he also suggested this was causing the steering judder as the gearbox was moving about.

id say warped discs aswell, you wont tell just by looking at them they may seem perfect as it will be ever so slight but if there is no play in anything else, wishbones or wheel bearings then its definitly warped discs

If the threads are past helicoil stage it means a new box or new casing section. Has the box been out recently?
