  1. What to look out for when buying a 2nd hand Bora

    Hello again i am going to test drive a vw bora tdi highline (2004), Manual 6 speed, Saloon, 1.9 Diesel (130), 04 (54) Plate, 66,000 miles,
    What should i look out for & listen for? the cam belt has been done. any pointers would help.

    I have just sold the twin of that car although it had done 8k less miles. £5950 from a dealer or £5000/£5250 private sale with no warranty/new MOT/service/free HPI/valet and half tank of derv!

    They're fairly reliable, but there are a number of issues which are well documented on here. Some cover spaceship mileage wth no problems others don't.

    Listen for clunks from the rear which may indicate worn axle bushes, similar at the front for worn bottom arm bushes. Dogbone bushes also wear causing jerky driveline.
    If cambelt has been done has the waterpump? And was the tensioner changed with the belt?
    Poor economy and loss of power usually means a failing air mass meter (often referred to as MAF).

    On PD engines it is critical that the correct engine oil has been used, otherwise the cam and followers can be toast. I change every 5 or 6K regardless and use Longlife 3.

    If it drives OK and mileage is genuine looks like a reasonable purchase.

    If there are lots of receipts, check them carefully - they can tell you a lot!

    He siad its got a full VW service history including invoices for the work done..
