Should i SCREW it?

this is not about some girl

im going to fit my GTI front end to the golf and was thinking about the number plate, should i screw it on or use the double sided tape?

I would double side tape it... I have done that on mine... and the gollf.

Reason 1 - Prevents water getting into the reg plate and causing black circles around the screw holes.

Reason 2 - At the time of fitting I did not have any screws or caps..

I use industrial strength Velcro from 3M

Allows me to quickly change plates should the need arise <cough>

double sided foam pads are the way to go

......just fitted a brande new set to mine to freshen the appearance and used this as I have done with my last 10 sets of plates or so on various cars.
Much better look all round

In this day & age , is it not unreasonable to expect VW to provide proper number plate screw fittings in the bumper ?
Using self tapping screws, designed for sheet metal applications, in thin plastic bumpers is not what I would call a proper engineering fix. If the bumper holes are drilled marginally oversize or the screws slight over tightened, the holes become stripped. Why can't VW provide fixings similar to that which they provide in their own rear estate tailgates ?
Other vehicle manufacturers can provide proper fixings , why can't VAG ?
My brand new MK6 Golf was supplied with stripped number plate holes leaving the plates loose . Grrrr.

Halfords stock sticky pads specially made for number plate fixing.

Hey there, do yourself a favour....Do NOT go to Halfords for these sticky pads unless you want to pay OTT!

When I fix mine I like to be sure so kinda tend to fit more than enough to do the job. On the plates I fitted today that was 4 either end and 3 in the middle (11) in total on the front and the same on the rear...(22) pads in total of the 1mm sticky foam pads.
Go to Halfords and they sell a pack of (3) pads for £2.49...thats around £19.92 if you wanna do as I do and be sure they stay put.
They sell the 3mm extra think pads in packs of (3) for £2.99.....These are supposed to be for front plate fixing where the bumper curves........Totally unncessary!

I bought these from Ebay link and at £1.79 for 8 pads it cost me £5.37......Huge difference

If you are happy to put less pads on your plates you could reduce this amount I guess.
My previous plates had been on the var for 3 and a half years with no issues with these pads!

Anyhow, for piece of mind and just over £5 they done the job and plates are secured to the car
