Going on a long drive next week from Yorkshire to Innsbruck. Sat Nav says 910 miles, planning to set off mid afternoon, ferry at 10 pm, France at 12.00 pm then across Belgium and down through Germany. I cant wait, I love that feeling of car all packed and setting off on a really long drive. Thank god for portable DVD player, I pod, and DS a lot easier than spotting red cars and fuzzy felt!

Envy you that, keen to have a go at similar in my Passat.

Were thinking about it for this summer, but the missus won flights to America, but next year, definitely thinking about it.

Which reminds me, must look into getting the dog's vaccinations sorted for her passport!

Did York to Lamballe, Brittany, last year. Know the feeling well! We also had the same - ipod (with the xcarlink adapter) and a portable DVD player for the kids in the rear... Something nice about using a family car for that exact purpose, plus a credit to the huge boot (even in the saloon...) - we weren't up to our necks in stuff in the cabin either.
    Have fun!

    Enjoy.

We're going to Vienna in 4 weeks.

Just watch rush hour around Brussels and near Cologne and Frankfurt.

Although French Autoroutes are generally quiet, Belgium and Germany can get nearly as busy as the UK.

Remember that you will need your Austrian Autobahn Carnet - but you can get that in Service Areas in Germany before you cross the border.

I think the best time to do it.

Have a good trip and enjoy the beer (and ski jump!!) in Innsbruck.

Have you been there before and driven the Grosglockner parkway?

It's something we hope to do this year.

Not been to Innsbruck before, I think you can drive south to Italy ( for a pizza1) over the second highest bridge in Europe, so thats one day trip planned.

Also looks like a good route to take in a few passes and go to Lietchenstein. I will have to see what the Grosglockner parkway is?

The ski jump dominates the town (you'll see what I mean when you stand in the middle of town).

The Grosglockner is the highest mountain in Austria and they are proud of the toll road near it - we're going to drive it this year on the way into Switzerland.

Lietchenstein is nothing special - but you've got to go!!

We drove over various passes between Switzerland and Italy two years ago (in an Audi A4) including the Stelvio - which is awesome.

Just remember to get your Austrian Carnet BEFORE you cross the border (the fines can be substantial) and also for Switzerland if you go there (same) - don't risk it they target foreign cars and the carnets are much cheaper than the fines.
