Hi guys - n/s front windows has stopped working. Previously, it was fine.

The window regulator appears to have become stuck - neither switch has any effect. I suspect the regulator is getting power since when the switch is pressed, the lights/bower, etc dim as if there is a draw of current.

Any one experienced this? Also, is it possible to remove the regulator, carrier, etc if the window cannot be lowered? i seem to recall the glass needs to be in a certain position in order to release it.

    Any tips would be great
    Ta!

The MK 4 Golfs had a design problem with the plastic clips holding the window regulator in position . They released a repair kit with steel clips to fix this problem but it was not made a recall as it was in the USA. The repair kit may be obtained from your VW dealer ( & from other sources I suspect ).
You may be one of the last owners whose car still has the original clips that has finally succumbed to the design flaw . You will need to remove the door card to investigate further.

so basically you are saying that the regulator could have mounting or alignment problems preventing it from being able to lower the glass? suppose i should strip the door and take a peek...

    cheers

Usually it's the plastic clips which break and the window falls into the door. If that hasn't happened the regulator may be working but has stuck. The pulley wire may be preventing it turning.

You can tape or chock the window up in the door, remove the inner trim, the regulator carrier panel lies behind. you then need to release the window from the clips. You can remove the carrier panel and window mechanism.

Hint: get some scotch tape and put it round the end of each connector on the electrical harness and the corresponding connector on the door. Label them up so you don't get confused.

If you need a new regulator, try your VW dealer they might have one or give you ot free. Otherwise about £50 off ebay.

It's not a difficult job, just need to take your time.

    Cheers
