06 VW Crafter 2.5tdi 109BHP. Engine keeps deciding to rev at around 1000 rpm but sometimes when sitting at traffic lights i hear a strange noise from under the bonnet, almost like a valve closing & the revs drop back to normal. start to drive again & revs are back upto 1000rpm. if i turn ignition off & fire it straight up the damn thing ticks over normally (untill i drive it again. seems to be getting more frequent now & is starting to p**s me off.
Had new engine from vw at 78000 & has done it since. now on 120000 miles!! Any ideas folks.

it does it on mine. 2009 crafter. mine is fitted with a dp filter. and it revs at 1000rpm cos the filter is building up. i have to take for a 15 min drive at 2500 rpm in 4th gear to get rid off the filter light that comes on. but that could explain why urs is doing that. New models are fitted with diesel particulate filters.

Mine also has a high tick over, sometimes white smokes, sometimes doesn't. I have tried vw to no avail, was the fault ever rectified , any help would be most most helpful. My is a 07 with dpf, but even a thrashing down the motorway doesn't cure the problem. Thanks to anyone who can help.

i think by what your explaining your filter could be knackered. i havent had the white smokes but my filter got permanently blocked. I was going to be charged £2400! but then found the turbo had failed which meant i wasnt getting any power to get my revs up to burn off the soot in the exhaust. so had it all renewed under warranty.
do your warning lights come on? are they flashing? if so its knackered. you could eventually lose power and damage your engine. so im told like. you need to get it in to vw and tell them to get it sorted out if its under warranty.
you dont thrash it down the motorway to burn it off. 50mph in 4th gear. revs at 2500rpm. does the trick for me everytime. had my van 2years now and so used to all the problems about dpf filters.
