    Hi All,

My motor has had tandem fuel pump issues over the past year or two. I've been told that they are replaced in pairs.

Is there an easy way to spot if I've got the new, uprated design pumps? Lifting the rear seat and pump covers it looks to me that only one is new but I don't know - one is yellow and new, the other grey/white and old looking. They have VDO manufacturer stamps on and numerous numbers, plus a sticker with more numbers. Any of them helpful in determining their age and type?

Or is the plastic cover just that, and not actually part of the pump?

    Ta.

    Gareth.

The tandem pump is what the pump on the head of a PD TDI is referred to.

What year and engine code is your A4 and is it front or four wheel drive?

Right ok. Now I'm even more confused!

From what the dealer has told me, I've had the pump on the engine block replaced as well as the 2(?) pumps in the tank.

It's an '07 170 TDi Quattro - don't know the engine code off the top of my head sorry.

There is one electric pump in the tank but the design of the tank for the propshaft on the quattro means that the left needs a suction jet pump which isn’t actually an electric pump but draws fuel from the left and delivers it to the electric pump on the right, which is called the “fuel delivery unit”. The tandem pump is definitely the one on the head.

Thanks for that - makes more sense now.

Although I'm not sure what the hell the dealer has been going on about!
