Well, after my old radio/cd player died, I purchased an RCD 510 and fitted it quite easilly into the Passat.

Three days later the battery was flat.

After reading all the threads on this issue, I decided to go to the VW dealership in Chesterfield to ask them to fit a new CAN BUS gateway.

they didn't know what I was talking about.

so I went to the VW dealership in Loughborough. They also didn't know what I was talking about. In fact, they advised me that my flat battery was not a result of a new radio.

I was so pleased with them I put the fuse back in and once again within three days, the battery was flat.

So I have decided to go to a scrap yard and get one myself and fit it myself.
I will also buy a Ross Tech dongle and code it myself.

My question to those who know is:

Where is the CAN BUS gateway....????

My car is a 2006 VW Passat Estate 2.0 TDi

    Thanking you all in advance

Sorry to hijack, but i think an easier fix is to run an ignition wire from the fuse box on the passenger side ( black/white wire) to power the unit. Of course it will only work when ignition is on or started but may be of some help to you. I read this somewhere just recently so please correct me if i'm wrong .............

Sure someone will be along to tell you the location anyway, but just thought i'd mention this and see where it goes...........Richie..
Ex Passat B6 owner......to many retrofits to mention !

    Thanks Richie...

I know how to do this but the radio keeps turning off every 20 minutes or so which can be a real pain.

i'm not sure a live wire will fix this

Its behind the air con controls and ashtray. Remember to save the old can bus coding before you do the swap

Got my Ross-Tech yesterday and tried it out.

Had a few fault codes in there, in particular the CAN Gateway:

Address 19: CAN Gateway Labels: 3C0-907-530.lbl
    Part No SW: 3C0 907 530 C HW: 3C0 907 951 A
    Component: Gateway 007 0040
    Revision: 00007000 Serial number: 0700C06606030D
    Coding: 3DFDAC04C02003
    Shop #: WSC 05311 000 00000
    2 Faults Found:
01333 - Door Control Module; Rear Left (J388)

    Time: 16:24:38
01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded
    000 - - - Intermittent

    Mileage: 149628 km
    Time Indication: 0
    Date: 2000.00.00
    Time: 15:35:04

Not surprising really as I changed the RCD 300 for an RCD 510 a few months ago.

Control module incorrectly coded must mean it can't communicate with the radio?

When I re-programme the new gateway, is it this that I save from the old gateway and re-code into the new gateway?

    Coding: 3DFDAC04C02003

    thanks
