Re: Matrix LED in the fog
How are they for visibility in fog? Always found brighter lights to be poor in fog and it used to be the case that yellower light is better for fog.
Be interested to know how the LEDs compare to halogens on this one.

They were pretty good. The didn't stay of full beam for long, rather they reduced intensity but we're adapting the distance of the beam for better visibility.
My other car has halogen headlights and they are crap in comparison at night... fog they seem ok but to be honest it's not that discernable. The beam pattern of the LEDs put the light further forward and dimmer than full beam. It seemed to adapt based on density of the fog

Nice! It annoys me that my 17 Passat R line doesn't have them. Even more so now they're standard 12 months after mine was built. Still something to look forward to next time [emoji3]

Re: Matrix LED in the fog
Fog lamps are the biggest scam ever, I swear, yet to see a car that actually makes anything look better in fog, have C7 with full led
Re: Matrix LED in the fog
Why did you have high beam activated in Fog? It would have been better to switch on the all-weather lamps.

They were on auto and the all weather LEDs were on too. And as I said, the matrix lights realised it was foggy and dimmed to take account of that, but spread the beam further then dipped beam improving visibility overall and they were really good. It gave light far enough ahead to see what was coming before you would have on dipped beam, without the glare of main beams.
So that's why I drove with them on [emoji57]

Re: Matrix LED in the fog
Not sure how the matrix lights could know it was foggy. I wonder if the level of light reflected back by the water particles in the air and hitting the auto-high-beam sensor was enough to trigger dipped beam mode - so the lights effectively "reacted" correctly to the foggy conditions without knowing it was foggy.
BTW: On a road I drive daily, there is a very sudden, sharp turn. The matrix lights activate the corner mode before I reach the bend or make any steering input at all. This tallies with Audi's own description of matrix light functions, which states that the lights use GPS data as part of the automatic beam control.
Also BTW: The adaptive beam angle is never as much as you think it is going to be or should be. On my previous MB, I think the maximum that the lights swivelled in a bend (driven purely by steering input) was around 12 degrees. It still made a big difference to the visibility round corners, even though the actual angle of movement didn't seem that great.

It definitely did not go into dipped beam mode. It was constantly changing the beam pattern and brightness. I wish I'd filmed it now. I kept playing with them on auto, then manually on dipped beam and then on high beam and there were noticeable changes between each one.
I've never noticed anything related to the GPS on mine. I don't find them hardly adaptive at all. All I notice is a patch whoch gets lighter or darker depending on which way i turn. I've had 4 previous cars with adaptive xenon lights so this was a big surprise how fixed they appear.
My Golf had 15 degrees which was brilliant in the bends, especially when on full beam.

Re: Matrix LED in the fog
Certainly agree that adaptive on xenons is much more obvious in its working than on these matrix lights - and xenon adaptive seemed better at lighting bends, too, than matrix. But then, apart from the amazing always-on-full-beam capability of matrix, I have not been at all impressed with LED lighting - xenon seems much better to me. I would certainly be disappointed if I had LED with no matrix capability - it would seem like a major step backwards in terms of lighting.
Roll on laser lights on the C8!
