Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
Hi, I have a slow puncture on one of my tyres. The road was unadopted where I used to live and I got a screw through the tyre shortly before fitting it.
Anyway I plugged it using a cheap repair kit off ebay - I've had some success in the past with these, but not recently. I have to pump it up every other day; it loses about 10psi in two days.
I was wondering if I could use a bit of tyre weld to permanently stop the tiny leak? I read the can in Halfords and it says take it to get repaired straight away - does this mean it attacks the inside of the tyre, or merely that it's just a temporary repair when used without the plug that I put in? Hope this makes sense.
Re: Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
It's to get you home, not for a permanent repair. If you squirt that gunk into your tyres it can settle inside in lumps and upset the wheel balance.
Splash out ten or fifteen quid or so and get the tyre properly checked and repaired, and make yourself and others on the road safer.
I just saw that Tyre Weld costs ten quid a tin. Half the price of a proper repair to gubber up your tyre!
Re: Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
Reminds me of those dental emergency repair kits, a bodge. When you come to have the tyre removed, your tyre fitter will apply the unbilled “tyre weld tax”....
Re: Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
The tyre fitters say they can't plug it again once it's had a plug, so I guess I'll try to repair it again myself. If I don't have any luck I'll try a bit of slime.
Re: Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
I hope you don’t drive on the same roads as me and my kin.... This is what REALLY scares me about future cars, amateurs screwing with them, if it was an airline or rail network it would be in the news and you arrested!

I'm a scairt Pa, real scairt. :1zhelp:

The time, effort and cost your putting into trying to save this tyre isn't worth it, or your life. A new tyre will cost approx. £100 maybe more or maybe less depending on the size.
What your tyre fitter was saying is its not safe to keep trying to fix it.
Re: Tyre weld to fix slow puncture?
A compromised tyre is never good.
Those who have two wheels tend to be much more aware of tyre wear and care. This is because the last thing between them meeting the tarmac, or not, is the two credit card bits of rubber in contact with the road. And if those two bits of rubber are also dealing with 100+bhp with acceleration & braking dynamics that are realistically unmatched on normal roads then that awareness is surely very sensible.
Having said that I used "Punctureseal" (Products | Punctureseal) primarily so that any puncture didn't just dump you on the floor, you got warning and tell tale coloured "spots" on the tyre. Don't use it in car tyres although you can.
Andy.

A decent tyre fitter should take the plug out and put a proper patch on the inside. If it's too close to the sidewall to do this, fit a new tyre.
As the tyres are the only thing connecting your car to the tarmac, please don't bodge it.
