They say it's the thought that counts and as I am in Scotland I guess I will need to be happy with that, cheers for the thought anyway and hope you get the car sorted, that will be the main thing :D
Hi,
It seems an older thread but somehow it is related. Ive got a VW Sharan 7M 2.0TDI with BRT engine. This balancer module casting has a number on it. The module casting nr: 03G103537B V200.
My mechanic told me that it is a common issue and this balance shaft has to be replaced. I was browsing online and here on the forum but it seems to me that everyone offers only some exchange service?!
Is it possible to buy a new balance shaft and not a used one? All I found is "remanufactured". None of them new.
VAG do not commission new balance shafts separately to the balancer unit and therefore the only way to get a new one is to buy a balancer unit from VW and take it out of there which is pointless, hugely expensive at well over £1000 and probably still inferior to the re-engineering process carried out on the exchange shafts when done correctly. KMB Direct have been doing this the longest but others are springing up as more cars doing low to average miles per year encounter the same problem. It's now 14 years since the first 'affected' engines came out so there will be 1000's of VAG cars still out there with the issue not addressed. It only affects 2.0 litre engines with balancer units fitted between 2005 and 2009 and not all engine codes iirc. There is a mass of info on this if you search this forum.
Thanks although I think you both misunderstood me. I dont want "exchange" and I dont want "remanufactured". Both of you linked KMB and I already found them but they offer again used, remanufactured AND exchange service. They might be in business for long but since others sell the same genuine Volkswagen balance shaft £50 less I dont think their shaft would be a real deal. On Ebay others sell the same remanufactured unit for £134. I wanted a new unit and possibly not an exchange service.
The reason for that my cousin in Australia has the same 2.0TDI engine and he wants to change this shaft before it fails. It is not the most convenient way for him to send the shaft here to the UK.
I found one company called zedperformance who sell aftermarket BUT new balance shafts without exchanging anything.

I placed an order with them yesterday night and today morning they dispatched the new unit. It is very likely that I'll get it early next week. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks
The misunderstanding being you left out the reason why you were looking for a new part not a genuine re-engineered shaft which is still superior to the original design. Glad you found a suitable part but there is no guarantee that the aftermarket part would be the quality of the genuine. For an extra £125 you can buy a KMB or other shaft and still send it but it would take a while for the old shaft to get back to them and for you to receive the £125 surcharge refund. You also have to be careful that the cheaper shafts don't have inferior hexagonal inserts put in as I found out when my first replacement shaft failed after 39k. I was lucky that I only lost the turbo which was a £299 exchange cost and the engine suffered no other damage.
HI Mad Mithc!
new to the forum after having our 2007 Passat tdi in the garage for the past 10 months following the perennial oil pressure issue. Sent to mechanics and diagnosis is noew oil pump, hex key and the balancer shaft. I m looking at a reco shaft, and wondering if this is an install that is relatively easy to undertake by someone with reasonably good mechanical knowledge?
I've heard good things about the IK reco shafts and its a damn sight cheaper than a full unit!
any advice would be appreciated
Cheers
Steve
If I can do it in the cold, on my driveway (garage full), with only a head torch for light, finishing at 2am in the morning, then yes should be relatively easier to do in more ambient conditions and if you know your way around a toolbox fairly well.
You'll need timing tools including the shaft alignment bit and the correct crank lock of the two available, new sump sealant (Dirko grey is my choice and on par with the VW stuff), new mounting bolts for the balance unit from VW / TPS, new circlip to retain the hex key, a new seal for the strainer pipe (optional), some absorbant mat / cardboard for the floor, rags not tissue, and a second pair of hands as the balance unit is ******' heavy! New oil and filter is also a good idea.
Avoid cheap exchange shafts especially if they look like they have inserts simply screwed into the centre of the shaft. A complete waste of a shaft and most likely will need proper re-engineering after a shorter lifespan as the inserts have too much room for the genuine VAG 100mm hex key.
I used KMB Direct simply because they seem to have been doing this for the longest. There are other firms that profess to do the same metal work, smelting, fusion or whatever the process is, offering cheaper shafts. Perhaps they are good, I have only experience of KMB and a cheap ebay shaft with inserts that wore out in less than 2 years.
If you choose to do it yourself it will cost around £250 to £300 all in perhaps nowadays even less. Quite satisfying if nothing else is toast on the engine because of the lack of oil. This issue destroys a fair few engines and breaks a number of parts on others, turbos, etc. Most of the procedure walk through (on my BMR) is covered in earlier posts of this thread.
Thanks for the advice DMitch16 - and apologies for the really slow reply. I have finally obtained a renewed balance shaft from KMB (had a few courier problems), and now I'm ready to install.
The assembly is all gear driven, and I have the shaft locking tool. Also took a while to obtain but its finally here too...
Question is: does this type need to be installed at TDC with the crank locking tool? I have read conflicting posts that it doesn't.... I've gone this far and would hate to have dramas at the 11th hour!
Cheers
Steve
