Golf Mk5 2004 Gt Tdi 2.0 turbo. Blue smoke and will not rev above 2000 rpm. Loss of power
Hi all. Newbie here. Please help.
We have had no issue with our car ever before.
We returned of holiday (2 weeks) on Wednesday 11th April 2018. I tried to start the car, however the battery was dead. I got a jump start from my father's car. The car started with heavy blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. I tried to rev it to blow it out however the revs would not go above 2000rpm. I then switched it off for a while and tried again same thing. I could hear a knocking noise coming from inside the engine whilst the car was idle. I believe it is in limp mode.
We have owned the car from brand new it has done 96k and serviced on time.
Notice from day one it has been drinking oil every few months so we just top it up with mobile one oil for Diesel engine oil
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Needs code read, but sounds like injector or EGR.

Post the 3 letter engine code as well, it might be BKD, BRE or something like that, this will be on the data sticker in your service book or maybe in the boot floor. If it is in limp mode it will have logged a fault code. It is easy to plug in a code reader but a basic OBDII reader may not find all the stored codes and will not scan all modules in the car.
How much oil do you mean by 'drinking'. is it say 500ml every few thousand miles or are you having to add a litre every 500 miles, is there oil dripping out of the turbo boost pipework and is the 'check engine' or low oil pressure warning light illuminated on the dash while it was running?

Hi Rob69, so sorry for the late reply back.
i will check the engine code and get back to you ASAP. Currently the mechanic is saying that he is unable to start the vehicle...he has tried to jump it and also tried a booster pack. Today I went and purchased a new Bosch S04 005 battery. Let’s hope it works so that we can get the error codes. He also mention that the dip stick was dry...I can’t see how that could have happened....he said he would top it up to max level
coming back to you question regarding oil consumption...I would say that we add 500ml every few thousand miles. We get the oil light on the dash to prompt us to top up. .no check engine or low pressure lights are showing or have shown whilst running.
its got me worried now as we Have never had any problems with this vehicle since new.

Must admit it doesn't sound promising - blue exhaust smoke, no oil on dipstick and knocking sound. I'd try to get the codes read first, if you can get it to start or even crank over, I'd also stick on an oil pressure gauge to confirm what sort of oil pressure you might have. good luck with it.

Quick update.
After changing the battery. The car fired up OK. Still blue / white smoke coming out the exhast pipe. Vw Mechanic confirmed the turbo has packed up. The engine oil is going straight through the turbo out of the exhaust. He tested this by filling 2 litres of oil into the engine via the filler cap, within a minute the dip stick was dry and a lot of smoke came out the exhaust. I have arranged for the car to be towed to a Vw Audi specialist in Harrow to see if they are able to fix the problem. If the turbo is gone. The cost will be £900 Inc original turbo and labour. He also mentioned that the Cat will need to be cleaned out.

Last and final Update.
The Audi & Vw specialist stripped the car down and found out that the turbo failed. He showed me the propeller had sized up and the nut had come off. They managed to find all the broken shrapnel within the engine sump and hoses which I was thankful for. The engine had no damage whatsoever new turbo was fitted and the car is back on the road as good as new.
