I was under the impression that the DMF had springs too rather than oil :confused: Although I know of someone who recently replaced a DMF on a bmw and the bell housing was full of thick grease that had come from the failed DMF so perhaps there are different types.(He spent hours cleaning the stuff out!)
As for the smoking on start up, If its a 2.5 TDI it could be the fuel pump timing is out, Usually after a belt failure when the new belt is fitted it can be a bit tricky to set the timing up again and should be checked using vagcom.
I have a T4 2.5 TDI and I know that if the pump timing is out on these they are a bugger to start from cold and are smokey until warmed up.
I am assuming the LT will be the same as the engines (2.5 TDI`s) I believe are basically the same.
