Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
So I recently brought a 1990 1.8 8v mk 2 golf gti. Which had a blown head gasket and a few other electrical issues. They've all been sorted. But now the engine is miss firing and down on compression on cylinder 4. And also now sounds like a small end has gone. Time to tear it down and inspect.

Post pics as you go, don't want a broken phone to spoil the thread.....
Re: Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
Nope. Going to get the old digital camera out this time and make sure it's uploaded daily. Well when I aventualy get it in a parking space so I can get the engine out. Got a stand coming from a friend so all should be hopefully good. Anyone no any good places for quality parts.
Re: Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
Finally got round to taking the sump off. And I have decided I need a new set of big end bearings on no2 cylinder. All other bearings have no play just this one.
Can you see what's wrong with this PAIR of bearings.

Did you remove the engine? It's not really necessary on that engine. I can't see the face of the bearing what's wrong with it?

Re: Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
Oh dear. I'd replace them all and take a close look at the oil pump
Re: Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
I checked the pump a while ago and was getting really good pressure so don't thing that's at fault. Got another bottom end I'm collecting on Saturday if I can find some transport.

Engine strip inspect and possible rebuild.
So picked up a short block on Saturday. And have stripped it down for parts. It's supprisingly in really good nick and the internals look like it's come from a low millage engine by the lack of wear and marks. Not bad for £10 :)
I do have a slight issue with the cam followers. I found one of mine was bust so brought another. All of them has a little bit of a spring in them then go hard. But the new one is just solid.
Going to pick up a new oil pump as a matter of course now and run an air line through all oil ways.
