Just a bit of help in understanding...

Ok so I'm gonna start from the beginning just so you know everything ...
I bought an s3, I drove 500 miles to get It, by time I got it home it was ticky and low on boost. Turns out, they took the fuel pump off and didn't replace the follower, it was meant to be an upgraded pump but wasn't so my bet was he swapped it with his mate or something before he sold it. Got it home with a knackered cam and pump. Bought a new uprated Loba pump, And a brand new inlet cam for it. Got my mechanic to replace it, got him to replace the chain and tensioner while he was there as I know it's a common fault. He called me after replacing the cam and said that it wasn't starting as it wasn't getting fuel and it was definitely a fuel issue. He had it a further week, and called me to come get it. I asked why it wouldn't start, he said that the vvt on the end of the exhaust cam was knackered and that's why it wouldn't start and I needed a new one, So he replaced it along with the exhaust cam (Which I also didn't understand) . I spoke to him the night before and he didn't mention this, And said he worked on it from 10pm-4am. I got it back, paid him £200... no mention of money for the exhaust cam, As he said he pulled it out his mates insurance job... So I got it back, no boost, trouble starting... He said it was because of my mods and I was to take it to get mapped but I was sure it was a timing issue.. took it back and now, it's running perfect... He said that he pulled up the vvt as he never timed it again after putting in the new exhaust cam... He said that I should of just took it to get mapped as they would of known what to do with the vvt. Now my question is, is there anyway to actually adjust the vvt, or the vvt to cause trouble starting? From my understand that's ********, and he actually just timed it wrong and took a guess and repalced the vvt, or threaded the bolt on the end while replacing the chain. I asked for my old cam back, and now he's saying I've just to keep the cam and the money.. but it's not about the money it's about the dodgy story.. I would like to double check my knowledge on this as I would hate to be unreasonable asking for my cam back as now he's treating me like I've done something wrong.

Anyone who can just help me understand if what I think/understand is right, or I'm actually wrong would be great. Thanks in advance!

Difficult one, do you want to lose him as a friend? To do the job he has done he would need special EA113 cam locking tools to get it right. From what you have paid him, if it is right now, it would be sensible to let it go.

I don't want to, no. But he's asking me for a further £100 now for the cam that he put in, So I'm just not wanting to get ripped off if it's not been done, or changed..im not 100% sure it's running right now tbh, it is certainly running better... I need to get it checked, I'm not sure he had the right tools. Ive never owned an s3 before, so not sure how it should be. From what I believe that the vvt doesn't need adjustment tho nor can be adjusted, is that right?

The £200 was for Labour only, about £1000 all in.
