Allroad Suspension Compressor
Anyone replaced their failed Suspension compressor? If so is there anything to watch out for?
My allroad now refuses to go above level 1 and the pump clatters away so I'm planning on getting a replacement, want to save some pennies by doing it myself though.
Cheers. :beerchug:

Are you sure that the problem is the compressor? Just a thought, wondered if air could escape somewhere. Maybe find a way to test pump first. I'm new to the car so don't know how yet!
I have slight suspension problems. Sometimes it drops to the floor (when you're parked) and the lamp flashes when you startup, but so far its always recovered. It still refuses to change heights automatically and always shows a G291 "implausible sensor signal" fault code on the diagnostic link.
It seems the control block at the rear of the car maybe faulty.
Re: Allroad Suspension Compressor
Hi
Ive had my compressor off to check it. Its not difficult to do on your own.
My advice is to get the car on two ramps rather than a jack and stand. Remember to get the car on the ramps with the car on at least level 1. The bolts on mine were a little rusty so WD40 the night b4 might help. When you remove the air pipe from the compressor be careful not to loose the small brass O ring. The connecting cables just pull off.
If the car is dropping to the floor over night then id suspect an air leak on the air bags, most likely the front ones. Simple test is to listen for the air leak or use the old washing up liquid and water trick.
After 100,000 an Allroad pretty much needs all the air bags replacing (at least the fronts anyway). If you’re going to replace the air bags/springs then use the Arnott ones. Ive got two fitted to the front of mine and im going to do the rears later in the summer.
Let me know if you need any more info

Not sure about your error, but just to mention to get the car to raise lower on auto ensure the M A N orange light is out on the level light indicator. if it is iluminated then it is in manual mode which will only raise/lower when you tell it too. however not allroads have this option, mine does its a 2000 plate, I believe it might be found only on the older ones??
To get in and out of Auto mode press and hold either the raise or the lower (not together) for 3 seconds the M A N Light will go out then you are in Auto. :)

Its interesting you say that because mine doesn't have this MAN light, mines also a 2000 model, it only has the 4 level lights. I did clear the fault codes and have the auto option working for a while but it seems as soon as the fault codes appear it stays at one level and doesn't adjust with speed.

Ok there goes the MAN light theory!!:o, however i assume you have the error light on in the dash (yellow car with up and down arrow) then if this is on your system will not raise and lower until you clear the fault and fix the G291 problem, sorry still don't know what G291 could be!! what else comes up in the code read?

Re: Allroad Suspension Compressor
i changed my compressor last year, fairly easy, hardest part was rusty bolts and not having any stands to raise it up.
I hope the pump is not faulty as audi want over 800 squid for them, managed to get mine off ebay so keep an eye out for people breaking cars, there was 2 on there last week.
I need to change 1 of my front air bags now, its dropping overnight.
Are the bags easy to change anyone? any special tools or stuff required?
Re: Allroad Suspension Compressor
Thanks for all the replies. It's nice to get a thread going that's useful.
My Allroad isn't settling overnight, it just won't pump up. Unless it's a hot day then it seems to work!!!! My only thought is that the pump seals are goosed and the heat helps them seal?
Pump rattles away for ages before the height error light coming on in the dash.
Now time to try and get a pump from fleabay :)

have a read at it all but in short, plenty of WD40 into the top pinch bolt before hand, and 16 & 18mm cranked spaners is a good start!!
its not very difficult but stuck bolts could hold you back, let us know how you get on.
