Increasingly heavy steering on my Golf VI estate
Have a Golf VI estate. I was't sure whether this of the mk V forum was the best place, given what's beneath the skin, but anyway:
the steering on our Golf (nov 2010) feels (is) increasingly heavy. It's not entirely without PAS but it's going the wrong way
Tyre pressure's are fine, so no issue there.
No warning lights have appeared and the car was recently at service so (I guess) not warnings 'pinged' on VAGCOM
I have a nasty feeling that this is gonna involve a horribly expensive steering rack fix, but is there anything else it could be that i could be looking into? I currently live in Denmark, where labour rates are around 2-3 times in the UK, so if it's gonna be a crippling expensive bill we'll probably consider p/ex'ing the car for a VII or something similar
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

You can swap the rack in like less than 2 hour's. But there a real pain to setup after and I reccomend going to a main dealer or a Vw specialist. Cost will be massive new. Dont think in the UK at a Vw dealer you would get much change out of £1500/ £2000 .

have you checked the power steering oil reservoir ?
could be low on oil or needs changed

It's electric power steering.

Thanks Flapperjack. Bugger bugger bugger
Does anyone know : are there any other known issues / quick fixes that could negate the issue a wee while?
Mrs Tillster uses the car for her commute - I don't really fancy her dealing with the surprise of the PAS going when she's out in the car.
Re: Increasingly heavy steering on my Golf VI estate
Hi Niall. As flapperjack said, it's an electrical motor on the V/VI
From what I've read, a steering motor failure often requires replacing the entire steering rack.

Its electric but it but it still has a reservoir on the right under the bonnet.
You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

There's no resevoir. It's all electric.

Re: Increasingly heavy steering on my Golf VI estate
Hi,
I have similar Issue on my 2010 passat estate. Every now and then I feel the steering becomes hard as if there is no power steering for 2 to 3 Seconds and the power steering becomes active. It does happen sometimes, not sure you are having the same Issue.
I am very worried now because of the cost if the Power steering fails. Strangely there isn't any fault code or lights when the Issue Happens. Can you please confirm if the Issue you are experiencing is as same as mine? Does any one else experiencing similar Problems?
Re: Increasingly heavy steering on my Golf VI estate
The 'low-powered' PAS on my golf sounds different to yours, insofar as my issue is constant, not intermittent, and doesn't - yet- involve he complete loss of PAS
Good luck with yours !
