Have a look on the gearbox casing for the ZF identification plate which gives the transmission code, then go to ZF.com and look up the parts you need.
on the earlier cars it gets a bit complicated determining whether you should use lifeguard 6 or lifeguard 8 fluid as you need to check the transmission serial number against an Audi TSB. Depending on the software level in the transmission controller, you might need the older fluid (if the transmission is not programmed to automatically adapt to changing friction characteristics) or the newer fluid (if your transmission can perform adaptations). Or maybe Crasher will be kind enough to look your VIN up and advise you on which fluid and parts you need. He is quite good like that if you’re nice to him :D
Yep, Crasher is quite an Oracle..
ive been quoted today £300 all in to have the job done by an Auto trans specialist.
I’d take that offer personally. The transmission fluid costs the best part of £200 if you’re buying ZF (check which fluid that quote is based on!)
i managed to find a copy of the TSB which mentions the chassis number where the fluid changes. It’s reasonably early in production life, Feb 2005 and the gearbox number after which the updated lifeguard 8 fluid must be used is 4000597. If you have vcds, scan the gearbox and it will tell you the serial number, or get under the car and look at the ZF information plate.
If it’s before that serial number you’re going to need to use lifeguard 6 (or one of the cheaper alternatives) to avoid causing damage. Or update the TCU with new software and use the lifeguard 8. After that serial number you should only use lifeguard 8.
if you are doing the job yourself, the ZF kit which contains both types of gasket, filter and fluid is probably the right way to go. This one is for a Quattro car and surprisingly affordable given how pricey the fluid is when bought 1 litre at a time.

Thanks for your help/ advice.
dont Audi do fixed price serviving?
They don’t seem to want to touch those ZF transmissions for some reason, claiming they are a sealed for life unit which doesn’t need oil or filter changes.
ZF themselves disagree:
