changed headlight switch got more problems!
Appreciate any help, I have a problem with a battery drain & headlight switch, been having to disconnect battery every 2 days, battery been replaced keeps charge ok when disconnected. Model a3 1.8T 51 plate, fuses all good.. I have sourced a second hand light switch from audi a3 aeh 1.6 8v (golf bora) parts are the same I think.
Anyway connected up lights work fine now (fog lights not working) battery was low so used battery pack (halfords) to start car, now instrument panel not working, ie speedo, rev counter & oil light warning comes on but not low, also fuel gauge & temp gauge not working-any ideas please I'm not eperienced with cars but trying to learn all fuses good..
Other problem was slight jumping of rev counter when running idle..

Re: changed headlight switch got more problems!
Are you saying that the faults in your instrument panel (I'm guessing the illumination side of it) and your fog lights have been introduced with the replacement switch? You can try putting the old one back in and see if those new faults go away again. After that you can also check that you connected the replacement switch properly, sometimes just taking it off and putting it back will work. The other possibility is that you've caused these new faults yourself during the replacement, did you pull hard on the wiring harness when trying to remove the old switch? Perhaps the second hand switch was faulty, was it tested first? You need to work out if these faults are with the switches or the car by swapping them around. If you can't afford a new switch from Audi, there's a few on eBay starting at about 45 quid or failing that, there's plenty out there in the scrapyards, they'll normally let you take them back if they don't work.
Re: changed headlight switch got more problems!
Hi Sly :) Thanks for reply was away for a few days, yeah bought 2nd hand switch but it was no good, really struggled to find a double pull twin fog light version, so I have taken the old one apart reassembled, refitted & all working again. I might try to get another switch anyway cause this original one may fail again but right for now. I'm new to this DIY mechanics, question on part no.s marking on the switch were
BK2 8L2 941 531J 5PR 21J-K 3031% and then Spain 04 0521 75, if I order from Audi whats the part no.. all this info?? I have only recently bought the car 10 yrs old I guess a few things will go wrong, I seem to have a slight battery drain, a hand free kit was connected to the stero I have removed this today fingers crossed, maybe the drain can be linked to the switch, daily voltage reading to see what I'm losing. Also on the instrument panel when car is idle the revs flashes & drops then goes back to normal just below 1, no loss of power in normal driving any ideas people & last but not least I have the electric window front passenger side which is not working, is it likely to be a motor, how do I find out or could it be a mechanism?? Sorry for so much information thanks you guys for any pointers-bought a Haynes manual today :D

Re: changed headlight switch got more problems!
I think that Crasher is using Erwin, which is a hugely expensive Audi parts list. The only online resource I've found for part numbers is vagcat, which is a russian site, and may or may not be working today. The other decent place for finding a part number is to phone or visit your friendly neighbourhood Audi dealer parts department. Mine have always been happy to tell me part numbers and even print out the etka page for me.

What Crasher didn't tell you was he could probably supply you with the part you need, he's far too modest to blow his own trumpet (or he enjoys watching us blow it for him )
