05 Polo 1.4 petrol access to spark plugs etc???
Hi,
My other half's polo returned last night making misfire type sounds and having had the engine light on for a hundred miles or so!
I thought i should take a look at the plugs but am immediately stumped as to how to get underneath the engiine cover. Can someone please give me a few hints before I break anything.
I have the usual tools.
I am just about to do a VCDS scan which may tell me something about the fault.
Thanks for any helpful advice.
Re: 05 Polo 1.4 petrol access to spark plugs etc???
Now done the VCDS scan and this shows the following fault code:
Address 01: Engine Labels: 036-906-034-APE.lbl
Part No: 036 906 034 JC
Component: MARELLI 4TV 6549
Coding: 00071
Shop #: WSC 00000
VCID: 5CBC98B1CC30A69
WVWZZZ9NZ6Y022248 VWZ7Z0E1355439
1 Fault Found:
16687 - Cylinder 3
P0303 - 35-00 - Misfire Detected
Readiness: 0000 0000
Does that tell anything other than misfire, and where?
Any helpful suggestions will be very welcome.
Thanks.

Re: 05 Polo 1.4 petrol access to spark plugs etc???
I suggest that you read my thread, it might give you some idea, it is 1.4 bby misfire. to get to the plugs you just pull the cover up, there is a small pipe on right which should be pulled off first. There is nothing to break (that i have found yet).

Witblitz, thanks for that pointer.
It certainly seems reasonably likely that my problem is similar and simply needs
a rather more enthusiastic driving style periodically to let it know who is boss!
I'll try that and report back tomorrow.
Re: 05 Polo 1.4 petrol access to spark plugs etc???
The engine cover is just held on with clips on the 1.4. Grab it at the front and give it a firm tug upwards and it should pop up. Then do the same with the back.
You should then be able to see the 4 ignition coil packs which need to be removed to get to the spark plugs themselves. The internet says that there is a special VAG tool to remove them but I find that unplugging them and using a flathead screwdriver to lever them out to be just as good.
Sounds like you might have a coil pack failure. Quite a common thing to fail on these engines it seems. I used to have one and it blew the top off a coilpack at 70mph on the motorway! Dramatic stuff.
Re: 05 Polo 1.4 petrol access to spark plugs etc???
After clearing the fault code, I took the car for a drive and all is well once more.
Many thanks for all helpful suggestions.
