Playing music via SD Card in MMI 3g high
In my 2009 A8 3.0 tdi Sport DPF U have MMI 3G HIGH. I have 2 SD card slots.
In slot one I have a 128gb micro sd (in an adaptor of which 68.2gb capacity has been used.
I have two questions.
1. Does MMI only recognise only a certain amount of data because two thirds of the files are not listed. Its as if its run out of capacity. But I thought it was reading directly from the sd card so should it matter?
I've stored the music in folders by artist name. When you get to the artists with the letter N you can see the folders but it says there is no music there. Pop the sd card in the laptop and hey presto everything is there fine.
2. Does it allow the use of different file types aswell as mp3 such as m4a?
If anyone can shed any light on this I would be grateful.

Re: Playing music via SD Card in MMI 3g high
A fairly typical limit for simple devices is 255 things in each folder, or a total number of files of 1023 (or other magic computer number). Do you have a flat list of artists in the card's root folder? Putting them in top level folders like A-H, I-P, Q-Z might help.
If you put the SD card in a Windows computer, open a command prompt and run "attrib /s m:\*.* > sd.txt" (where m: is whatever letter is used for the card) you end up with a file you can open in Excel, etc to see if you're hitting some magic number around the N mark.

Great info thanks. In windows simply highlighting all folders down to N and checking properties suggests 4000 files and around 38gb of data.
The strange thing is that all other folder names from N to Z are listed on MMI but they are all empty!

Re: Playing music via SD Card in MMI 3g high
4095 or 4096 would be a computer magic number.
If the reader is designed for FAT12 (as used on early floppy discs) then Wikipedia says 4085 "entries" of folder and file names are allowed.
You could try reformatting the card to FAT32 in Windows. The MMI will either recognise it and hopefully allow 65,000 or so entries - or simply not recognise it at all. You'll lose all content if you do that of course.

Thanks VAG-Abound. I will give that a try and let you know how it goes

This suggests we're on the right track (ha ha, no pun intended): Audi: How to Use an SD Card | Audiworld

Hi,
According to the post below, the MMI 3G High system has a limit of 4000 tracks per SD card, and 1000 per directory on the card:
Please Help SD card problem in Audi A4 2010
You didn't indicate how many tracks are on your card - just that about two thirds are not being displayed. If you have around 12000 tracks, that would sound about right?
Cheers!
MF.

I have 7136 files in a total of 131 folders, totalling around 63gb.
The SD card is already formated as FAT32.
So I guess I'm limited to 4000 files. Ah well bears the days of cassette tapes I guess.
