Sudden drop in mpg Golf tdi 2.0l BKD after diesel fill up?

Hello people,

My 2.0l gt tdi golf has dropped mpg today, normally I can get an easy indicated 60 to 70mpg on my trip to and from work 35ish miles each way, however this morning i put £50 worth of diesel in the tank which put my range up to 500ish miles.

I noticed this afternoon that I only achieved 45mpg at the point in my journey home when I would normally be at around the high 50's early 60's mpg. The thing is that nothing different had changed in my normal driving style or traffic conditions.

I have scanned for any fault codes and there are no issues there, I've also checked the air filter to check for any obstructions, no problems there.

All I can put it down to is a bad tank of diesel from the usual supermarket petrol station I use.

Does anyone else think it could be some dodgy diesel, or anything else?:1zhelp:

Tyre pressures?

I will have a look in the morning.I'm not the best a checking tyre pressure regularly however I'll give it a go.Thanks for your idea its worth a look.I will update the threadThe only other thing I was going to try was to use the fuel up and the stick in a amount of v power diesel

Well I've found the cause of the drop in mpg, I found that the near side front caliper was sticking, it made for a dodgy drive to work this morning. 9 miles away from work after a couple of heavy stops I pulled over with the disk and pads smoking!!!
With no other option I limped the car to work, then took it to a friends garage to be fixed. The piston was seized solid so I had no option other than a replacment caliper along with new discs and pads. My credit card had a good work out today ahhhhhh.

Mpg all good now.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to one-off mpg figures. I'd only start to worry if I saw a drop over a number of journeys/tank fulls. Also, it has been very windy today. Maybe you had a head wind? It can make a big difference.

I have a 1.9 TDI Mk V and like to keep a check on it's efficiency (see Stuart Dalby - 2005 Volkswagen Golf Mk 5 - Fuel Consumption). I normally cruise around at around 60mph on long motorway trips but I'd struggle to get 60-70mpg at this time of year. I estimate I'd have to drive steadily for nearer 100 miles to offset the initial poor fuel consumption whilst the engine is warming up to achieve those figures right now.

Thanks for your reply Stuart, now all seems back to normal now, I think that driving through a flooded village lane could be my only explanation to what may have cause the brakes to seize up on the NSF, my car passed its mot only a couple of weeks ago so obviously they were ok then. As for mpg driving like miss daisy the other day doing a steady 50 mph I broke my record if an indicated average of 80mpg yes 80mpg!!! To be fair my car will average 63-65mpg on the setting 2 display not bad for a 2.0l diesel with 135k on the clock!!

Hello guys! Sorry, i may be a bit off topic but i too have a Golf MK V 2.0 TDI with BKD engine and my MPG is nowhere near what you report here... maybe you can help me. Around city i never get anything higher than 29 - 30 MPG. Al data scanned with VCDS seems ok. I have changed the thermostat because the engine did not get over 78 degrees. Now the temperature is ok. 89 to 90 degrees. But the MPG hasn't improved at all. Maybe you guys have an idea... I also had a brake caliper that was stuck, but now i've fixed it.

I have a 2.0 tdi and get an average of 57mpg on my A-road and motorway commute. I think 60-70 in a 2.0l is ambitious. 30-35 in town, not really suited to the engine (should have gone for the fsi), sounds about right.

What do you average over a long motorway run?
