07 Touran 'Squeal'
Hi,
I have a 2007 1.9 TDI Touran. About 3 Weeks ago it started to have a slight squeal when I change gear when the engine is cold. I thought at first that it was the clutch as the clutch pedal was 'kicking back' slightly. I had a complete clutch fitted and although the clutch is now very smooth, the noise has not gone away. Today the noise increased when I revved the car at low speed. Any ideas please?
Thanks
Gina

Re: 07 Touran 'Squeal'
Hi, presuming that your clutch replacement included the release bearing, the squeal sounds like it is coming from a belt, either the timing belt or the auxilliary drive bekt, thats the one you can see, that drives the alternator and air con compressor. A pretty common fault with the auxy belt is the one - way clutch in the alternator pulley seizes up and the belt starts flapping about especially at idling engine speed. This flapping eventually wears out the belt tensioner and the belt comes loose or off. Look at thebelt with the engine idling, is it running flat and smooth, or vibrating and bouncing? Get someone to rev the engine, does it squeal? Put the air con full on and all the electric items, lights, screen heater etc to put load on the belt, then rev the engine, see if it squeals more in pain. The alternator clutch is a cheap quick fix, timing belt is more expensive but less common to squeal. I had to change the alternator clutch on my 1.9 touran at around 100k miles.

Re: 07 Touran 'Squeal'
Hi Rob69
Thanks for the reply, yes the new clutch was all new, release bearing and mass flywheel etc. The car has done 47k and the timing belt was changed by the VW dealer at 40k so I hope it's not that.
I'll do the checks you suggest and report back.
Thanks again.

Hi
finally got to the bottom of the noise - Turbo wastegate actuator sticking. ended up with a complete new turbo, Touran running nice, didn't realise how much power the car had lost. Anyway, thanks. Gina

Ok, glad you got it sorted, I reckon you'll be hanging into that car for a while yet with those expensive jobs just being done!
