QUESTION electric cooling fan staying on?
Hi guys,
just had my 2.4ltr (2001 plate) serviced by an independent on the weekend.
he said the only thing he found problem wise was that the secondary cooling fan after about 10 mins or so was comming on and then staying on constantly and not switching off (unless the ignition is turned off). He had hooked the car up to the VAG tool but said the car was comming back clean - no fault codes comming back at all.
the car temp gauge is running at 90 as it always has.
I have got a brake fluid change at an audi dealer this saturday (£49!!) my independent suggested i get them to see if they can find fault but with audi labour at £104/hour im bit unwilling to
so a few questions for you guys:
1. Any ideas??
2. Apart from perhaps an increase in petrol consumption ok to continue as is?
Re: QUESTION electric cooling fan staying on?
Is your Air Con turned on when this happens? Also,do you have an outside temperature sensor? If so does it work,as may all be connected.
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
Hi,
i tried it again this morning without the air con on and the fan didnt come on.
on the weekend i did have the air con on (for heating) and the fan stayed on once the engine had got to operating temp.
It does have an outside temp but that is reading correctly
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
The VW commercials do this also when the Air Con is switched on,the fan cuts-in.If its something it never used to do,at least this points the diagnosis in the right direction.Maybe you never noticed it b4?
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
i have noticed the fan before as when it cuts in its like a jet engine but it always used to switch on and offf as required. now its just on all the time until i turn the car off.
perhaps tonight ill switch the air con on then after a while switch it off - the fan should switch off right?
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
Yes it should.I dont rekon it should run constantly with the air con `on`though.
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
so i took it for a run last night got the engine up to operating temp (90C on the gauge) deliverately didnt turn on the AC system. once at 90C gave it about another 10 mins then switched the AC on. outside temp was 11C so the system was blowing mildly warm air. no sign of the 2nd fan cutting in. was in the car for about 25mins
this morning ran the ac from start up - outside temp was 9c so warmer air came out once engine reached operating temp. 15 mins or so drive no sign of the 2nd fan cutting in
now im wondering if i should let audi spend the 1 hour/£104 investigation time on saturday looking into the "fault"
:(
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
Aircon on will run the fan, switch off the aircon, get the engine hot and see if the fans cut in and out.
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
thanks.
will try that this evening
once at 90C should it start cutting in at normal town drving (30-40mph) or will i need to give it a "run" down the dual carriage way?
Re: electric cooling fan staying on?
I would run the car at fast idle with the bonnet up so you can see the fans.
The fans won't cut in untill the engine is over 90C, once over 90C the fans should run at slow speed, if the engine continues to get hotter the fans should run at double speed.
You could also have a dodgy coolant temp. sensor, thermoswitch in the rad or fan relay..
