2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
Help wanted by newcomer. The emission warning light came on a few days ago. A friend analysed the problems and 5 errors appeared. He cleared these to see if they would reappear. The next morning the light reappeared and he plugged in the gadget again and 5 errors re-appeared relating to the glowplugs on 4 of the 6 cylinders plus a throttle valve issue. The car is running sweetly and without a cold start problem (as might be expected with glow plug issues). I have recently had the car independently serviced and when the light came on I checked the oil level and found it to be too high, the garage removed some to take it down to the correct level. Could this have been the cause of the glow plug problem? It seems odd that the car went from zero errors then straight to 5 errors. The car has done 132,000 miles with out any previous problems. Can anyone shed any light on the matter and advise as to what I should do next? any help gratefully received. Howard.
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
Throttle valve? Could this also be the intake manifold flap?
If so I had an issue with the intake manifold flap which also showed a fault on glow plug 3. Once the IMF was replaced all other fault codes went.
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
Thanks for the advice. As the fault is affecting a number of cylinders as you suggest, there may be something else that is causing the glow plug problems. Maybe I should concentrate on the throttle issue first.
I've also been warned that the glow plugs can break when trying to remove them, especially with ceramic type. Could anyone advise whether my car has the ceramic type? If ulimately they do need to be removed is it a good idea to soak them in WD40 pror to the job? All advise gratefully received! Howard.
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
I won't claim to be an expert, but...
I can't see any way that too much oil could affect the glowplugs
If you do decide to remove the glowplugs use a proper penetrating oil such as Plusgas rather than WD40
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
yes they snap off in the head frequently
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
Hi, further to my earlier posts I have more details on the faults, they are:
- Glowplugs - no signal intermittent P161 on cylinders 1,2 & 5.
- Left hydraulic engine mount solenoid valve N144 05491 P1573 (or P1575 - I can't read my own writing!)
- Cam shaft position sensor G40-12295 P3007
- Throttle valve control system 05445 - P1545
Re. 1 - what type of glowplug is fitted to this motor?
Re. 2 - don't understand this one, but doesn't sound too serious
Re. 3 - This sounds as though it could be serious
Re. 4 - Does this need replacement or just a strip down and clean up?
The car is running as well as ever. Advice would be much appreciated, or do I bite the bullet and take it in to a main agent or local specialist? (I'm based near Dunstable, Beds. any local recommended independent specialists?)
Howard.
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
According to the worshop manual 2.7 always fitted with metal glow plugs - ceramic ones only used on 3.0
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
I have exactly the same problem with my 2006 2.7 TDI, however it revving up slightly while on tickover and making some pretty nasty noises when the key was in pre-ignition. The garage tracked it down to the air intake and cleared this out (a new one would have cost £350 ish) and all codes have now cleared except throttle valve control and glow plug, which keep coming up. The car seems to run fine.
Howard, did you get any further with solving your similar problems?
Thanks
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
Hi, I bit the bullet and had the cam sensor and intake manifold flap replaced. This cured the problem and I haven't bothered with the glowplugs. The light has gone out but I guess if I checked the glowplug fault codes will still be there. Car's done another 23,000 miles since without any problem, Cheers, Howard.
PS An independent company called Inde-tech of Milton Keynes did the work and have serviced it since. They know their stuff and costs are reasonable.
Re: 2005 A6 2.7 TDI Glowplug Problem
How much did the manifold flap cost to be replaced?
Thanks!
