Would you? A7 3.0 272 to Q5 2.0 TFSI
Hi all,
Been a while since I have posted and never in this part of the world!
So I've been messing around in a Q3 recently (pre 2020 shape) and love the height and comfort compared to the A7 which is on 21's, rock hard suspension etc etc. But the A7 despite being 5 years old puts a smile on my face everytime whether its looking at it or just sitting in it.
From the start, its a good spec with elec heated seats, HUD, tech pack, full leather, black styling etc etc and that 3.0 tdi 272 is lovely, quiet and again, plenty of smiling.
But with a little one on the way, loving the height of the Q3 and at the moment, a good trade-in value for the A7 + the whole being a diesel, not driving as much long-distance ... I'm thinking maybe a Q5 is a good change for me.
It would however be the first petrol car I've had ever unless you count a 1.2l corsa as a first car. It would also be the first 4-cyl engine and its around 20-30bhp less than the A7 + probably heavier.
So ... would you?
There are a few niggles about the Q5 in that its the same MIB2 system I think with the additional touchpad, I cant believe even the latest 2020 models have a simple wheel at the back for heating compared to the nice colourful digital A7 display, matrix lighting is rare but led is not, I would say bye to the woo woo indicator lights in the front (rears have them in the Q5) and the oh so dependant HUD! It would be a 2017/2018 Q5 with at the very least, tech pack, virtual cockpit, s-line styling pack, led lights, full leather and heated fronts.
Curious to see if anyone has gone from a 3.0 v6 tdi engine to a 2.0 tfsi + their thoughts/feelings.
Thanks in advance :)

Not quite what you're looking for, but I went from an A6 Black Edition Ultra 2.0TDi (FWD) in the UK to a Q5 Prestige 2.0 TFSi (quattro) in the US. I had assumed the Q5 would feel slower with less torque and quattro dulling some of the power, but it's actually pretty good. The S-Tronic feels smoother than the one in my A6 and if you are in the mood you can make rapid progress. It's not as quick as the Merc E53 we have, but I wouldn't expect it to be. I notice the increased fuel consumption - I need to fill up after 450 to 500 miles in the Q5 whereas my A6 would do 700 on a tank, but fuel is so cheap over here (comparatively) that it's not an issue for me. My Q5 has the "Black Optics Pack", meaning it comes with 20" wheels and all-season tyres, but the ride is more compliant than my A6 BE on 20" wheels - a good thing for the potholes in NJ roads :) My Q5 has HUD, and I'm guessing it might be possible to find cars in the UK that have it too?
I'd suggest you take a test drive in a Q5 to see what you think. Make sure you check for known issues like the squeaky brake pedal (needs an updated brake servo to fix). Good luck, and let us know how you get on!
Cheers!
MF.

Thank you MF!
You're right - I need to test drive it. I've had hell with a dealership we just got the Q3 from and almost had a testdrive there today but I think so much has gone on, not only did I get the keys for the 2.0 TDI, he was not even interested in letting me go for the testdrive regardless.
I'll keep an eye out with our local one who we know very well and have always looked after us
I've gone from a C6 A6 2.0 to a C6 2.7 TDI and that was a massive improvement.
I then went from that 2.7 TDI fwd to a C7 A6 2.0 fwd which on paper was almost the same but it was a massive let down - the whole v6 to 4-cyl just did not work for me and within a few months got rid.
And finally from that C7, I went to the A7 3.0 272 tdi I'm in now and that is my perfect bubble really however Diesel is getting more and more difficult to own with carparks charging more, entering cities charging more etc
