VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
My MFD / dashboard instrument cluster shows AIRBAG FAULT whilst VAGCOM reports the following:
Address 15: Airbags
Controller: 6Q0 909 605 B
Component: 05 AIRBAG VW5 0003
Coding: 12341
Shop #: WSC 00028
1 Fault Found:
00588 - Airbag Igniter: Driver Side (N95)
32-10 - Resistance too High - Intermittent
Does this suggest simply (hopefully) a poor wiring connection to any of (i) the airbag within the steering (ii) the crash sensor under the driver's seat cross member or (iii) the airbag control unit J234 by the bulkhead on the right of the accelerator.
Or maybe it suggests a faulty crash sensor or airbag controller unit.
Or maybe it suggests that I should GSI (get Someone In) because it is none of the above and it is very complicated?
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Hi The fault is intermittent, which means there is a faulty connection, comes sometimes after adjusting the height of the steering wheel. It could be the coil connector with slip ring (F138) which is defective. Delate the fault, and enter measured block values for the airbag, channel 001 and in zone 1 you can read the value for the igniter, you can at the same time put the steering wheel in different positions to see if the value changes
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Kenney, Thank you.
I will check the connections I mentioned (under the driver's seat, inside the steering wheel and at the airbag controller/CPU behind the bulkhead by the accelerator).
Last night I ran the VAGCOM airbag measuring blocks I got Correct or Not Installed for Groups 3 and 5 which includes Driver's Side A/B Igniter and Voltage Supply Correct. However, for Group 1 Driver's Air Bag the reading was Too High.(Colours are as shown per the VAGCOM screen).
I also moved the steering wheel which did not cause any change in the dynamic measuring blocks.
I deleted the fault code and it appeared again as I re-ran VAGCOM.
Looking at the EKTA parts list (and on ErWin) I see Airbag kits, installation kits and airbags but I cannot see any parts specifically described as "coil connector with spring kit (F138)" although I have seen passing referenecs to the latter on the US forum (?) VWVortex. I guess, but I do not know, that the coil connector and spring kit are inside the steering wheel ?
Any additional steer would be much appreciated.:o
Thank you
Kevin
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
I need the year and model Depending on the model, the airbag coil connector and return spring with slip ring -F 138- is part of the steering column switch.
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Kenney,
It's a 1999 Passat 1.8T, manual. Engine APU.
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
It's such a common fault you will find the part being sold on e-bay. The seller can probably tell you what you need.
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Thanks guys for your comments. Today, I replaced the attached item (see attached photos) which appears to be called various names but the problem remains. Any suggestions on what to do next would be appreciated. Should I / can I next replace the airbag "3B0 880 201 AE"
The words "Airbag Fault" plus the airbag icon STILL appear on the dashboard instrument cluster. I assume that deleting the codes using Vagcom will not stop the "Airbag Fault" words showing on the dashboard instrument cluster - I assume the words go away automatically once (and only after) the underlying fault is fixed.
VW describe the attached item as a "Ring" but I am not sure if it is the part that you are referring to.

Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Yes that is the part in question It is possible to check the individual components of the airbag system and to check which components are actually defective.Since you do not have the test tool to do this, before you go out and buy an airbag, can you not lend a unit frorm a mate, just to try it.I can send you the how to determine which part is defective
Re: VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault
Headache. As kenney says you are probably looking for a dirty connection. It's easier to find if you can connect vag-com and simply pull apart and clean each connector that you find. Resetting the airbag light each time. When it stays off you've found the fault.
VAGCOM Fault Code 00588 - Airbag fault - possibly fixed
Kenney and Martin 1810 and eveyone else,
Following your excellent advice, this VAGCOM fault code has gone and the airbag fault light has gone (first time for weeks).
Jiggling wires with Measuring Blocks - 15 airbag / group block 1-5 and watching the results identified that the wiring under the driver's seat was iffy.
Replacing the connectors and splicing wires between the two connectors shown here -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/27466575@N03/3132287793/
has fixed it so far. I will keep my fingers crossed.
Thank you so much.
Regards
Kevin
