CARPLAY installed on 2012 A6 - with photos of MMI screen
now installed CarPlay on my pre FL , easy to install.
1) connect CarPlay box to AUDI AMI socket , plug in microphone into CarPlay box
2) connect to power
3) plug in iPhone
4) cycle through the apps using the controller supplied or use Siri (the supplied controller can attach to the steering wheel with the holder provided or it can be removed from the holder and placed some where else.
all works fine - grt that I have up to date maps now as my maps were 2011 , all music is stored on my phone and and on jukebox so I C an listen to music when CarPlay is not in use , just need to download a radio app now .

Would it work with MMI RMC? Any VCDS coding to enable AV input?

If you have an Audi Music Interface socket in the centre armrest , it can be installed , no VCDS coding required. ,
If have the AMI socket you will need to buy an AMI to RCA lead see pic
you chose "external input" on the MMI media settings to select CarPlay

Yes, I do have an AMI interface. Hmm, worth a try.
Is this the one you've got? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073GZT9...I151BE54Z1BOHD
Re: CARPLAY installed on 2012 A6 - with photos of MMI screen
Yes that's the one , it took a week to arrive, comes with instructions as well.
today was just to make sure it works , will do proper install at the weekend - will put the CarPlay box in the glovebox and run the cables to the armrest centre console and the power cables to fuse box on the passenger side using a switched live.
the Lightning cable the goes from the iPhone to the CarPlay box , but it doesn't charge the iPhone - to remedy this you can buy a double adapter so one goes into the CarPlay box and the other into the cigarette lighter in the centre armrest.

How does the handsfree work once you use this CarPlay?
Do you make and receive calls via CarPlay?
Do you still pair your phone via bluetooth?
How did you wire the microphone? The cabin MIC is no longer in use, right?
Re: CARPLAY installed on 2012 A6 - with photos of MMI screen
1) I guess handsfree still works as - If you have two phones you could pair one of via Bluetooth, and connect the other via CarPlay - havnt tried this yet - no reason why it wouldn't work as when I connect my iPhone to the CarPlay box I had turned my Bluetooth off.
2) yes you can make and recive calls via CarPlay and send txt messages - have a look on you tube on how to use CarPlay .
NOTE you cannot touch the screen to select the app, - Use Siri or cycle through the menu using the controller.
3) the microphone plugs into the CarPlay box - down to the individual where the microphone is located.
The cabin microphone is not used when using CarPlay - but if you press the SDS button it still works with the other functions of the car as per normal- no change.
i have Video in motion enabled on my MMI -No! Not to watch movies - so I could mirror my phone on the screen to get up to date maps , so may well have to get VIM enabled ? Not sure

I may get in August. You can test it and provide a feedback in the meantime :)
Re: CARPLAY installed on 2012 A6 - with photos of MMI screen
Error or on my part- the CarPlay box does charge your phone and the charge is powerful enough to use the "Hey Siri" feature.
you don't have to press the " button" on the supplied controller to activate Siri , when you plug in your phone you can say "Hey Siri" , then for example say "send message to xxxxxxxxxxxxx" , same with phone calls. - so hands free
Navigation , you can use "hey Siri , get directions to xxxxxxxx" etc , I couldn't get Siri to start the route guidance (maybe there is a specific command for this ?) - I pressed the "button" on the supplied controller to start directions.
i havnt tried the music side of things but guess you can say " hey Siri , play xxxxxxxx song" ?
perhaps someone will chime on there experience of using the factory fitted CarPlay.
NOTE - I did plug a Samsung S7 (with android auto installed) and it doesn't work, so guess you would need a specific "Android Auto box" if you an android user
hope this helps.
