Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
The ECON button that controls A/C compressor has decided to stop working.
Currently the button shows no light which should mean AC compressor is switched on (I haven’t checked the MVB’s on VAGCOM to confirm this).
I have confirmed that the switch appears to work as when I press it the fans come on and then turn off when pressed again (however I don’t have the convenient light to tell me this).
So it looks like the LED / light isn’t working possibly due to bad wiring or connection? Not sure if LEDs can burn out or become defective?
The switch works but the indication light doesn’t.....
Any ideas what this might be?
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
I would suspect the AC system is empty, start with a code read.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
It’s been regassed......I also replaced the condenser / radiator (the one that sits in front of the main coolant radiator for the engine) prior to regassing as the one on there was original and looked knackered!
The switch appears to work as I explained before the radiator fans come on (both of them)....and the air goes cold...
I had a look at the wiring behind the HVAC controls and couldn’t see anything that looked bad but would need to probe them with a multimeter.
Could the gas have leaked out?
Hopefully it hasn’t!
Is that why the ECON LED doesn’t light up?
As you’ve said need to run a VCDS scan see if there is any fault codes.
Shall report back with scan report.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
A code read will tell you what you need to know, if there are no codes and the air goes cold I would suspect the LED is faulty and it is not replaceable easily.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
So it’s finally chucked a code....
00229 - Refrigerant Pressure: 002 Lower Limit Exceeded
Ross Tech site says.....
Code:
00229 - Refrigerant Pressure: 001 Upper Limit Exceeded
Possible Causes
Refrigerant System overcharged
Cooling Fan(s) are not functioning correctly
Condenser is dirty or Airflow is restricted or blocked
Refrigerant System blockage, stuck expansion valve, etc..
Refrigerant Pressure Sensor
Possible Solutions
Use a Gauge Set to check Low and High pressures
Recover and Recharge Refrigerant to proper charge level (refer to vehicle label)
Check Cooling fans, 'Output Test' with VCDS
Check Expansion Valve
Refrigerant Pressure Sensor:
Check Measuring Value Blocks
Check wiring, connections
Check for leak at sensor connector)
00229 - Refrigerant Pressure: 002 Lower Limit Exceeded
Possible Causes
Refrigerant System undercharged
Weak compressor / clutch
Stuck open Expansion Valve
Refrigerant Pressure Sensor
Possible Solutions
Use a Gauge Set to check Low and High pressures
Recover and Recharge Refrigerant to proper charge level (refer to vehicle label)
Check Compressor / clutch
Check Expansion Valve
Refrigerant Pressure Sensor:
Check Measuring Value Blocks
Check wiring, connections
Check for leak at sensor connector)
Also after checking the measuring blocks in Auto HVAC module on VCDS it’s in status 3 which means the compressor is off due to low pressure <2.0bar.
You hover the mouse over the box / reading and it comes up with a description outlining all the status outcomes.
So I’m suspecting a leak somewhere. Going to get my UV torch out and see if there is anything obvious. (Unless the aircon doesn’t have the UV leak detection dye in it when it was regassed last June?
Perhaps this isn’t the case and doesn’t have it at all and you have do add it yourself?
Have read that the pressure sensor is a potential area of concern.
The condenser / radiator thing that sits behind main engine coolant radiator on the lock carrier was replaced also in last June as was an original part and was passed its best. New orings were used for the pipe that attaches to it.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
Over pressure suggests the sender is faulty or the fans are not running. Change the sender (it's on a Schrader valve so easy) and then check the gas pressure; if necessary get it regassed.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
It’s under pressure??? Or am I missing something?
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
The first fault code said over pressure, when this happens the sender can burst in the centre and then you get under pressure, the second code.
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
Is the part number 1K0 959 126 A?
Or has it been superseded?
Re: Golf 1.6 FSI - ECON Button not working
Just a few times... 5K0 959 126
