    Gear or chain, that early is failure prone. Using your VIN I can see your car was built 12.05.2006 and so it is gear driven 77mm.

    That suggests a possible oil pressure problem due to sludge in the sump, this allows the VVT system to go out of sync but then come back when the pressure

    You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged
