The Volkswagen Golf and Passat models have been praised by vehicle safety experts at the Thatcham Research Centre, who have seen a 45 per cent drop in third party personal injury insurance claims thanks to the fitment of auto-emergency braking systems.

The latest generation Golf went on sale in the UK in January 2013. All except for the entry-level S models have Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) as standard, with ACC including the radar sensor controlled distance monitoring system Front Assist, as well as city emergency braking and cruise control. Since launch, third party injury claims on the latest Golf are 45 per cent lower than for the equivalent ‘Small Family Car Control Group’.

Matthew Avery, Director of Safety at Thatcham Research, said: ‘These findings are based on the equivalent of more than 7,000 Mk VII Golf models insured for a full 12 months on the road, and come from claims data from our insurance members. When we saw figures based on an initial small sample, we were surprised, as they exceeded our own performance testing. However the figures held up, even after almost doubling the sample group, and have therefore given us a glimpse of what safety on UK roads could look like in the future.’

Although such systems are not new, it was the Golf that ’democratised safety’ and brought ACC to a wide audience. The system operates over a speed range from 30 to 160 km/h (approx. 18 to 99 mph) with a manual gearbox and with DSG. In vehicles with DSG, it can intervene to such an extent that the car may be slowed to

First application of electric biturbo propulsion in a TFSI engine and 48v system power up the ante in Audi Wörthersee show car

    • 600PS and 650Nm (479.4 lb-ft), 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and 192mph top speed
    • Five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI fitted with electric bi-turbo for spontaneous response and torque boost of up to 200Nm
    • quattro all-wheel drive, adjustable coilover suspension and manual transmission with open shift gate, 48-volt electrical system fitted
    • Development chief Prof. Dr. Hackenberg: “Technology close to production readiness”
    • Premiere at Wörthersee (May 13-16)

The atmosphere will be especially highly charged at this year’s Wörthersee Tour festival because it will play host to an Audi TT clubsport turbo concept delivering a colossal 600PS and 650Nm with the help of an innovative electrically driven biturbo compressor that is close to being production ready. With its stripped-out interior, wider stance and distinctive rear wing the most extreme TT to date is intentionally reminiscent of the thoroughbred Audi 90 IMSA GTO race car of the late 1980s, so it is guaranteed to make an impact at Austria’s annual meeting for Volkswagen Group enthusiasts.

“The electric biturbo signifies a new dimension in driving enjoyment; it boosts sprinting ability and torque and enables high peak power,” explains Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi Board Member for Technical Development. “In our TDI engines, we are close to production readiness with this technology. We are now presenting it in a TFSI – here too, we are the first automaker in the world to do this. For our fans at Wörthersee, we have packaged the electric biturbo in a very sporty show car.”

The Ibiza’s emotional and dynamic design continues to be well received by customers and is a central purchasing reason, so the team have focused their attention on new running gear which takes comfort to a whole new level, as well as upgrading the design and quality of the interior.

“The New Ibiza will further expand SEAT’s current success. It is the first example of how we ‘Leonize our Portfolio’, applying the successful formula of Leon into all our model range. The new ŠKODA Fabia R5 caused a sensation at its first ever race, with the ŠKODA team bringing home a clear victory from the new model’s world premiere in the Šumava Klatovy Rally. Now the high-tech racer will be presented as an estate show car at the 34th GTI meeting at Wörthersee (13 to 16 May 2015). ŠKODA will also be presenting the ŠKODA Fabia R5 alongside three other sports cars.

As many as 200,000 tuning and motorsport enthusiasts will be making the pilgrimage to Wörthersee in Austria between 13 and 16 May to indulge in their passion for fast cars. This will be ŠKODA’s sixth appearance at the GTI meeting, where the brand will be presenting five sporty models.

Wraps removed from new 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder using innovative combustion process at the Vienna Motor Symposium

    • New 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder engine with innovative combustion method
    • Top figures: 190PS, 320 Nm (236.0 lb-ft), in excess of 56mpg
    • To be installed in the new Audi A4 by the end of 2015
    • Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg: “A prime example of the Audi rightsizing strategy”

Audi is relentlessly pursuing an ever better balance between performance and economy across its engine range, and the latest evidence of this is a new 190PS 2.0-litre TFSI notable as the most efficient petrol-powered unit in its class. The newcomer exemplifies the brand’s Vorsprung durch Technik philosophy by way of an innovative new combustion method, and will be entered into service in the all-new A4 later in 2015.

Over ten years ago, Audi launched its first series production engine featuring a ground-breaking combination of turbocharging and direct injection. This made the brand with the four rings the trendsetter in downsizing and downspeeding.

“We’re now taking a crucial step further with rightsizing,” said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG. The reduction in displacement and engine speed can be optimally effective only if reasonably related to the vehicle class and the customers’ everyday use, explains the Technical Director. “Rightsizing thus involves the optimal interplay of vehicle class, displacement, output, torque and efficiency characteristics under everyday conditions. Our new 2.0 TFSI is a prime example of Vorsprung ...

    • SEAT Leon collects two awards in Auto Express Driver Power 2015 survey: ‘Best Compact Family Car’ and ‘Best In-Car Tech’
    • SEAT Leon ranked impressive 4th overall

SEAT’s high-selling Leon is certainly no stranger to award wins, particularly those bearing an Auto Express magazine engraving. Now, the sporty Spanish marque’s best-seller is celebrating two of its finest to date, having collected ‘Best Compact Family Car’ and ‘Best In-Car Tech’ in this year’s Driver Power customer satisfaction survey.

Sending the Leon family awards tally into double figures for the last 12 months alone, the five-door hatch posted a mighty 92.89% through an unbeatable combination of equipment levels, quality and style, to hold off a series of challengers in the hard fought ‘Compact Family Car’ category, including the Peugeot 308 and Volvo V40. Fittingly, given SEAT’s ‘Technology to Enjoy’ strapline, it came out on top for In-Car Tech too, no doubt in part due to the Technology Pack (including full LED headlight pack, navigation system and DAB radio), which many owners have enjoyed free of charge in recent times.

Steve Fowler, Editor-in-chief of Auto Express, said: “The SEAT Leon is a serial Auto Express Award winner and it seems owners feel the same way. Not only has it beaten some strong competition to top the compact family class, thanks to a fine blend of good performance mixed with affordable running costs, the tech on offer has also been well above owners’ expectations.”

    • Superb, Yeti and Roomster each win their individual classes in 2015 Auto Express Driver Power customer satisfaction survey
    • Over 60,000 people responded to annual survey
    • Second success in a row for Superb, and four victories for Yeti

ŠKODA customers have once again confirmed that the Czech brand makes some of the most satisfying cars to own, with three class wins in the annual Auto Express Driver Power customer satisfaction survey.

The 2015 Auto Express Driver Power survey attracted 61,113 respondents who were asked to judge their car in a number of key areas, from ride quality to practicality. The ŠKODA Yeti stormed to the top of the Best Off-road/SUV category, making it four class wins in a row. The ŠKODA Roomster took victory
in the Best MPV category, and customers voted the ŠKODA Superb the Best Family Car.

Steve Fowler, Editor-in-Chief of Auto Express said: “Skoda has been a consistent winner in our Driver Power surveys, and 2015 is no different. SUV buyers are a demanding lot, but the Yeti is clearly loved by owners. And despite their age, the Roomster and Superb winning their categories shows that owners don’t fall out of love with their Skodas.”

Commenting on the 2015 Driver Power results, Alasdair Stewart, Brand Director for ŠKODA UK said: “This is another great result for ŠKODA. We’re delighted that our customers are so passionate about their cars. We’ve already introduced some great new products this year, in the shape of the Fabia Hatch and Estate, and with the new Superb arriving
