All-new luxury saloon which pushes technological limits in numerous areas, including full driving automation, makes its world debut

    • World debut for flagship model at Audi Summit in Barcelona
    • New design language and a pioneering touch operating concept
    • Piloted driving functions to be rolled out in production Audi A8 versions from 2018
    • Available to order in the UK from September, UK pricing TBC, first deliveries in late 2017

Today is where the future begins in the luxury class: The new Audi A8 makes its world debut at the Audi Summit in Barcelona. In its fourth generation, the flagship model again sets the benchmark for Vorsprung durch Technik with a new design language, an innovative touchscreen operating concept and systematic drivetrain electrification. The Audi A8 is also the first production car in the world to have been developed for highly automated driving. From 2018, Audi will gradually be taking piloted driving functions such as parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot into production.

Doyen of style: the exterior design

The new Audi A8 is stylistically defining – it signals the beginning of a new design era for the entire brand. The front end with its wide, upright Singleframe grille and the fluid, muscular body convey power, elegance, sophistication and modernity, and deliver on the promise made by the Audi prologue design study. The luxury saloon makes a suitably emphatic statement whether in 5.17-metre ‘standard’ form or as the A8 L, which has a 13 centimetre longer wheelbase.

The Audi brand is renowned worldwide for consistent innovation in design and engineering, for lightweight construction and for quattro permanent all-wheel drive – and every facet of the new A8 reflects these values.

    • Four new petrol engine options in Passat and Tiguan families
    • Previously diesel- or hybrid-engined Passat gains new units
    • Tiguan SUV petrol engine line-up is significantly expanded

Four efficient petrol engines are now available to order for the first time from Volkswagen Retailers in the popular Passat Saloon and Estate, and Tiguan SUV, model ranges.

The comprehensive line-up of new petrol engines now being offered in Passat and Tiguan further broaden the cars’ appeal while also allowing the growing numbers of buyers keen to enjoy the benefits of petrol power to consider two of Volkswagen’s most popular models.

The stylish Passat Saloon and Estate family enters this growing market sector with four petrol engines options, ranging from a frugal 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS to a potent 2.0-litre TSI 220 PS, and also including the impressive 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS with Active Cylinder Technology.

What’s more, for the first time the sporty R-Line trim is being made available with an entry-level engine in Passat. This broadens choice as well as making stylish R-Line ownership even more accessible – with the new 1.4-litre TSI 125 PS Passat R-Line a particularly attractive proposition for style- and budget-conscious buyers.

Hard-headed fleet and business users could be equally enamoured of the new petrol-powered Passats thanks to a strong set of benefit in kind (BIK) statistics.

When it comes to company car tax, the Passat 1.4 TSI ACT 150 PS SE Business six-speed manual, with an on-the-road price of Ł23,775 RRP, produces a BIK rating of 22% meaning a 40% tax payer would incur a tax charge of Ł6,880 over a typical three

Seven years is a long time for any model of car, but at the top end of the luxury segment it’s an eternity. That's how long it's been since the last generation Audi A8 was launched, but now we have news of its replacement.

When you’re spending upwards of Ł65,000 on a luxury saloon you expect it to not only drive well and be the ultimate palace of comfort, you also expect state of the art technology that those buying further down the food chain can’t even dream of.

To meet these uber high demands, Audi has just announced full details of their new, fourth generation 2017 A8 featuring “new design language, an innovative touchscreen operating concept and systematic drivetrain electrification”.

The real headline for this new flagship A8 is that it’s Audi’s big step towards a world of automated motoring with it being: “developed for highly automated driving”. With software updates coming in 2018, the A8 will have features such as parking pilot, garage pilot and traffic jam pilot.

Unlike the BMW 7 Series, the new A8 will be able to park itself into a space or garage while the driver just clicks a button from their smartphone – no actual remote control driving is required, which if you have tried the BMW system, you will know is a good thing.

Parking itself almost seems like quite a basic feature compared to Audi’s next bit of tech, the traffic jam pilot. This system allows, through the pressing ...

The Skoda Yeti is a real people’s car, owned as daily driver for those with supercars to families who just need to be able to fit three children’s seats in the back. As its production run, starting in 2009, is about to come to an end, we take a look at the end of the line car to figure out if it’s going to be missed.

With the Karoq arriving soon, Skoda’s compact SUV line-up will be changed forever. With the Yeti, Skoda offered a car with the abilities of a four wheel drive SUV, but without too much compromise in driveability. The looks may have been divisive, but if you get past that, then you could get a real ‘do anything’ vehicle for just over Ł17k.

To fill the gap left by the Yeti, the Volkswagen group can now offer you an updated VW Tiguan (the comfortable option), a SEAT Ateca (the sporty option) and soon, the Skoda Karoq (the good value option). The thing is though, all of those are genuine compact SUVs, and that’s not necessarily what everyone wants to drive.

The Skoda Yeti is built on the VW A5 (PQ35) platform like the old MK6 Golf and MK2 Audi TT, and it was given a body that’s part hatchback, part MPV and small part SUV. This results in the Yeti having a few odd angles, and a hint of Popemobile, but with many real car people loving it. Perhaps it harks back to a time when manufacturers made curio models, like the Renault Vel Satis, and these were held dear to owner’s hearts. Unlike curios, however, the Skoda Yeti ...

As a collective who are fond of the VW Group cars, we can quite often pigeon hole the brands; Audi = posh, VW = quality family vehicles, Skoda = value and SEAT = young and sporty. What happens, however, when the brands cross over into each other’s territory, for example, when SEAT makes a compact SUV? Can they really make it young and sporty?

To find out, we drove the new SEAT Ateca for a week and lived with it as a family car.

Our SEAT Ateca was a XCELLENCE 2.0 TDI 4Drive 150 PS 6-speed manual with the XCELLENCE Pack (top-view camera, Park Assist, and electric tailgate with virtual pedal), SEAT Sound System (135W/six-channel amplifier,10 speakers, boot mounted subwoofer and 18-inch space saver spare wheel) and 19-inch ‘Exclusive’ machined bi-colour alloy wheels.

Although the Ateca might look familiar, if you are used to the VW Tiguan, SEAT have given it a slightly sportier edge with some crisper lines. It’s also slightly smaller too, so I prefer to think of it as a raised up SEAT Leon.

The sporty intentions continue on the inside where there’s a decent level of bolstering on the seats - more than you’d anticipate of a car in this segment. Other than that, the interior is clearly well made but a tad bland. SEAT used to have a bit more flare with their interiors (not always in a good way) but they have played it fairly safe with this model.

In terms of space, the Ateca has room for five with ...

Longer items can be comfortably transported in the interior of the compact SUV – thanks to the folding front passenger seat.

It is clear from the exterior shape, modified lines and larger dimensions that this is a completely new vehicle. The ŠKODA KAROQ is a sports utility vehicle with character: The emotive and dynamic design with numerous crystalline elements characterises ŠKODA’s new SUV design language.

Audi will embrace the future with two advanced new Q SUVs and three e-tron battery electric vehicles while also replacing five ‘core’ models

    • New model generations in five core series, expansion of SUV family, extensive electrification
    • Technology for driverless city cars ready for an initial small series by 2021

Audi is facing up to the challenges of the present day but also confidently embracing the future with ambitious plans. Following a year that was impacted by the diesel crisis, the company intends to continue pushing forward with its strategic transformation, the details of which have just been outlined to shareholders by the Board of Management at its Annual General Meeting in Neckarsulm, Germany.

“We are rejuvenating our model portfolio enormously and will renew five existing core model series by mid-2018,” stated Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “In addition, we will expand our successful Q family by 2019 with two new concepts – the Audi Q8 and the Audi Q4 – and we will launch our battery-electric e-tron models.” Audi plans to launch three new electric models by 2020, after which the brand will gradually electrify models in each of its core series.

The focus this year is on top-end models with the new generations of the Audi A8 and Audi A7. The premium manufacturer will unveil the A8 at the first Audi Summit to be held in Barcelona on July 11. With this new event concept, the Ingolstadt-based company will create an exclusive presentation format all around the Four Rings. “There, we will show the world everything ...
