The RS models from Audi Sport GmbH are the dynamic spearheads of their respective product lines. They have a strong character that consists of distinct design differentiation, full everyday usability, effortless top performance, and a thrilling driving experience. This results from a relentless focus on minute details by the designers and development and test engineers, and it is perfected over numerous test drives around the world. This is a behind-the-scenes look at development work.

The North Loop (Nordschleife) of the Nürburgring is a legend among race tracks:

The 20.832-kilometre course is among the most challenging worldwide. And every single metre is truly a tough challenge: the compression at the Fuchsröhre, the kickbacks at the Karussell, or the jump at the Pflanzgarten. More than 80 percent of the course is driven with full power. With maximum load applied in fast motion, every kilometre on this course equates to multiple kilometres of regular road operation. 8,000 kilometres of endurance testing on the North Loop easily equates to a car’s entire lifetime. With its high demands, the North
Loop is the benchmark for every performance car. If you can survive here, you can survive on the world’s roads.

The North Loop can also tell a knowledgeable driver a lot about an automobile: Its strengths and weaknesses, precise handling to achieve fast lap times, easy controllability at the limit and, most of all, solid quality even in the most challenging conditions. This is why the North Loop is one of the fixed stars in the cosmos of vehicle development and testing at Audi Sport GmbH.

A North Loop expert working for Audi Sport: Frank Stippler

Frank Stippler is one of the people who know the “Green Hell” best. The 45-year-old was born in Cologne and lives in the Eifel region. He is connected with the history ...

    • Beautiful materials combine with the latest technology
    • Rear Seat Entertainment, Naim audio and the Touch Screen Remote bring audio-visual technology to the fingertips
    • Integrated bottle cooler delivers chilled refreshments
    • An almost infinite number of ways to specify the rear cabin

A range of rear cabin options for the all new Flying Spur showcases Bentley’s expertise in creating a modern cabin of unrivalled luxury and innovation. From the very start of development, the focus was on ensuring that passengers in the rear experience the same standard and quality as those in the front. Customers have the ability to select unique configurations tailoring the rear cabin to suit their desires and requirements.

Through a range of optional equipment including Rear Seat Entertainment tablets, audio options up to the industry-leading Naim for Bentley system and even the luxury of an onboard two-bottle drinks cooler, the rear cabin of the Flying Spur is the ultimate place to work or relax while on the road.

The new refrigerated bottle cooler can be found between the rear seats behind the centre armrest. With two levels of cooling from +6°C to -6°C and the ability to accommodate six 330ml soft drinks, four 500ml bottles or two full sized (750ml) champagne bottles, the cooler can be stocked to suit any journey. A completely new design means that the cooler is packaged into a much smaller space than the previous generation Flying Spur, meaning less intrusion into the vast 420 litre boot space.

    • Latest engine is offered exclusively on Life trim with manual gearbox
    • New entry-point to Golf ownership, priced at £23,300 RRP OTR
    • Golf now has six powertrains to choose from

The new Volkswagen Golf line-up has been expanded further, with the addition of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.

The eighth-generation Golf opened for order in February 2020, with two 1.5-litre petrol engines and two 2.0-litre diesel units on offer, while a month later the advanced 1.5 eTSI mild-hybrid was made available. With the arrival of this frugal new powertrain option, the entry-price of the Golf is now £23,300 RRP OTR, for the Golf Life 1.0 TSI 110 PS 6-speed manual.

With the compact, three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbocharged engine installed, the Golf is able to sprint to 62 mph from standstill in 10.2 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 126 mph (where permitted). The new engine results in the Golf being capable of returning between 49.6-53.3 mpg on the combined WLTP cycle, while emitting between 121-129 g/km of CO2 on the WLTP cycle.

This new engine will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and only with Life trim. It features the efficient TSI Miller combustion process and a turbocharger with variable turbocharger geometry. The mild-hybrid version of this engine with standard dual clutch gearbox (DSG) will be available at a later date.

The Golf range now starts with the 1.0-litre TSI 110 PS engine in Life trim. It is equipped as standard with 16-inch ‘Norfolk’ alloy wheels and automatic ...

    • Networked Vehicle Dynamics Manager guarantees a new level of added performance
    • Design of new Golf GTI1 is characterised by a superior, sporty character
    • New Engine Start/Stop button pulses in red before the engine starts

Agile drive, the running gear of dreams, unmistakable design, perfect ergonomics, unadulterated driving pleasure – that’s the DNA of a true sports car. At Volkswagen, this is represented by three letters: GTI. The eighth generation of the sporty Golf derivate is now on the way. The new Golf GTI is more digital, networked, more sharply designed and more active in motion than ever before. Its turbocharged engine generates 180 kW (245 PS). The new Vehicle Dynamics Manager intelligently manages the electromechanical running gear systems. Maximum dynamism, maximum comfort – Golf GTI combines both.

    Perfect front-wheel drive

The eighth Golf GTI generation reflects front-wheel drive’s new status quo. The new Vehicle Dynamics Manager plays a decisive part here. “This higher-level control system centrally coordinates all electromechanical running gear functions,” explains Karsten Schebsdat, Head of Driving Dynamics, Steering and Control Systems. “Thanks to the combination of new running gear setup plus front-axle locking differential and Vehicle Dynamics Manager we were able to elevate the Golf GTI’s outstanding overall performance to an even higher level. This applies all the more if the DCC running gear featuring a new software application and adjustable dampers is also on board.”

GTI drivers can select their very own setup using the standard ...

    • Fourth-generation Octavia features range of brand-new advanced safety technologies
    • Turn Assist, Exit Warning and Collision Avoidance Assist all make debut
    • New Octavia is first in class to launch innovative Turn Assist technology
    • Safety features designed to protect drivers, fellow motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
    • SE First Edition trim starts from £22,390 OTR

ŠKODA has revealed a raft of safety features which are all set to make their debut for the brand in the fourth-generation Octavia, when it is released in UK showrooms this summer.

The new technologies won’t just ensure safety for the driver of the vehicle but also other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

Turn Assist will be introduced for the first time in any ŠKODA and the Octavia is the first vehicle in its class to launch the innovative safety technology. Using the Octavia’s on-board cameras, the system will be able to monitor oncoming traffic when turning right at a junction as well as identify cyclists and pedestrians. If immediate danger is detected when executing a manoeuvre, the vehicle will be brought to a complete standstill, triggering the warning signal and preventing a possible collision.

This advanced safety feature will be in standby mode every time the engine is switched on and is activated when the right indicator is on. While the indicator would demonstrate to other road users the intention of the driver, Turn Assist is able to ensure additional assistance so that any potential accident is avoided.

Another first to feature on a ŠKODA is the ...

    • Harald Demuth – Developing the new secret Audi rally weapon
    • David Ingram – Hoisting the quattro high above the capital
    • Phil Short – Winning in a rally quattro first time out
    • Graham Rood – Plotting the route to victory
    • Norman Gault – Amping the power up to 700PS
    • The cars – Rallying with many types of quattro

The game-changing Audi quattro made its UK debut in London in 1980. Here, five former members of the Audi UK Rally Team recall how it changed the world, and we take a look back at the numerous iterations of the quattro rally car.
    Harald Demuth – Rally driver

Two-time German Rally Champion Harald Demuth helped develop the quattro, campaigned Group B and 80 versions in the UK and drove an Audi 100 quattro up a snow-covered Finnish ski jump in the famous 1986 Audi television advert.

‘I was driving for Toyota in the German Rally Championship when I had the choice to sign for Audi or Volkswagen for the 1979 season. Volkswagen had an excellent record with the Golf, but Audi had no presence in rallying. However, there was a lot of whispering behind hands that Audi had something special waiting in the bush, as we say.

To gain experience of the sport, Audi began rallying a front-wheel-drive 80. We were telling everyone how good that car was, but what we couldn’t say was that we were developing the quattro, which was just light years ahead of the 80. We tested an early quattro all-wheel-drive system in an 80 bodyshell.

On the 1982 RAC Rally, I was lying behind Hannu Mikkola in a quattro. OK, the gap was quite big, but I was on course to finish second.

Then I had an off on the last day and ended up fifth. David Sutton, who was running the Audi UK rally team, came over and asked me if I would drive for him.

Over the years I drove the Group B quattro and the 80 quattro in the UK. There was a massive difference in the performance, of course. But the handling and the feeling in the corners was very similar thanks to the all-wheel-drive system. ...

    • Seven vibrant shades define a Bentley rainbow
    • Bentley’s unmatched paint palette traverses the entire spectrum
    • Rainbow-themed winner of Bentley Mulliner Bacalar design contest
    • Support of local community continues during Covid-19 crisis

Bentley has defined two versions of the symbol of hope during the Covid-19 crisis – the rainbow – through seven of its own vibrant paint colours available as part of Bentley spectrum, and a unique Bentley Mulliner Bacalar.

A recent online competition for Bentley colleagues and their families to design their own Bentley Mulliner Bacalar resulted in a beautiful rainbow-themed winner. The extremely rare and exclusive Barchetta-style Bacalar relaunches true coachbuilding at Bentley Mulliner, and while real-world production is limited to just 12 cars, anyone is able to imagine their dream specification from Bentley’s unrivalled spectrum of interior and exterior colours. Judged by Bentley’s Director of Design, Stefan Sielaff, a winner was selected for both the exterior and interior. The exterior winner was Eleanor, whose vibrant rainbow-themed concept reflected the current situation with a symbol of gratefulness and hope.

As Bentley starts its recovery and continues to support the community, its own version of the rainbow can be created from a paint range as diverse as it is extensive. From rich reds through vibrant mid-tones through to energetic blues and purples, these are the seven colours that make up the Bentley rainbow:

    • T-Roc Black Edition adds style and equipment to successful SE model
    • Trim adds more than £2,000 of equipment for small step up in price
    • Striking specification priced at £23,750 RRP OTR for 115 PS 1.0 TSI

The Volkswagen T-Roc has been given an added dose of style with the introduction of a new Black Edition trim level, adding black-coloured trim and features to the interior and exterior of the model, as well as value-boosting additional equipment.

Following on from the Touareg in receiving a stylish Black Edition trim in its line-up, the T-Roc Black Edition brings a sleek black-finish to its grille trim, door mirror caps, roof rails and exhaust pipes, as well as adding rear privacy glass, an eye-catching geometric decal on the car’s C-pillar, 18-inch ‘Arlo Black’ alloy wheels and LED headlights.

On the inside, the black theme continues, with ‘Piano Black’ dashpads, black roof lining, leather-wrapped gearshift knob and multifunction sports steering wheel with contrasting grey stitching, white ambient lighting and footwell illumination.

When specified individually the additional equipment would cost in excess of £2,000, and so the new model represents a considerable value boost, especially when combined with the extra style delivered by the Black Edition-exclusive accessories. As per the rest of the T-Roc range, the Black Edition is available with a host of options to further personalise and add to the equipment list of each car, with Vienna leather upholstery, a ‘beats’ audio sound pack and sports suspension among ...
