Each generation of Porsche 911 Turbo has held up the claim of being a global benchmark for high-performance sports cars. It has maintained this reputation since 1975 by continually honing a combination of exhilarating performance and everyday usability, delivering relentless power coupled with conscientious efficiency. The latest generation of the two-plus-two seater is more than twice as powerful as the original 911 Turbo, which was powered by a three-litre, single-turbocharged, 260 PS flat-six engine. As the 911 Turbo has become faster and more comfortable over the past 45 years, it has always stayed true to its original defining character – a compelling mix of pioneering spirit and tradition.

The new generation 911 Turbo Coupé and Cabriolet that are announced today sit beneath the flagship 911 Turbo S, unveiled earlier this year. With a 580 PS version of the characteristic flat-six, twin-turbo engines, the 911 Turbo offers 40 PS more than the prior generation model and consequently is able to dip under the three second 0-62 mph yardstick; specifically in 2.8 seconds (- 0.2 seconds quicker than before). This is aided by 750 Nm of low rev pull (+ 40 Nm), now without an overboost time limit, that makes quick sprints more spontaneous and effortless. In this way, the metrics for power output, acceleration and torque of the new 911 Turbo match those of the previous model 911 Turbo S.

The 3,745 cc six-cylinder flat ‘boxer’ engine in the 911 Turbo now features symmetrical VTG turbochargers with electrically controlled wastegate bypass valves. The VTG system adjusts the intake boost according to engine speed ...

An unrivalled combination of sporting driving dynamics and powerful and efficient powertrains has seen the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Porsche Taycan 4S rewarded in the What Car? Electric Car Awards 2020 announced today.

The monthly consumer motoring magazine reviewed the hybrid and electric car market, and the expert jurors assessed all vehicle aspects with a view to helping buyers understand more about this developing segment. And in key areas such as electric performance and everyday use, as well as the traditional sports car heartland of driving enjoyment, the two Porsche models stood out.

In presenting the Panamera with its Performance Hybrid award, the dynamic qualities of the Porsche clearly resonated with the judges at What Car?, and commented: “With lots of driver appeal, sensible running costs and a beautiful interior, this Panamera is a prime example of how plug-in hybrids can be exciting and yet eminently liveable.“

The Porsche plug-in hybrid always starts in purely electric ‘E-Power‘ mode and operates as a zero-emission vehicle for a range of up to 31 miles (WLTP) and a maximum speed of 87 mph. The 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine produces 330 PS and is combined with a 136 PS electric motor. The electric motor is supplied with power via a liquid-cooled lithium-ion 14.1 kWh battery.

A total system power of 462 PS drives all four wheels, and the standard three-chamber air suspension balances comfort and agility. The Panamera E-Hybrid can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds and where permitted can achieve a top speed ...

    • OLEV funded, delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, nine-partner UK study aims for real-world application by 2026
    • Supports Bentley’s desire to lead sustainable luxury mobility

Bentley Motors today announces a three-year research study that promises to transform electric vehicle powertrains, utilising a fully integrated, free from rare-earth magnet e-axle that supports electric vehicle architectures. This reinforces Bentley’s ambition to lead sustainable luxury mobility and introduce the first fully electric Bentley by 2026.

The study, titled OCTOPUS (Optimised Components, Test and simulatiOn, toolkits for Powertrains which integrate Ultra high-speed motor Solutions) follows an initial 18-month investigation that delivered a technological breakthrough in electric drive systems for high-performance vehicles.

Building on the UK’s leading electronics research, the resulting electric drive system exceeded the latest permanent magnet motor performance while simultaneously removing the need for both rare-earth magnets and copper windings, delivering a package both cost effective and recyclable at its end of life.

OCTOPUS will take this leading-edge motor, power electronics and packaging transmission design, adding next generation materials, manufacturing processes, simulation and test cycles to deliver a full e-axle powertrain with unique levels of integration and revolutionary performance characteristics suitable for real world application ...

    • SEAT Mii electric named Value Electric Car of the Year
    • Good real-world range and driving dynamics help scoop second What Car? award
    • Inaugural What Car? Electric Car awards recognises the UK’s best electric and plug-in hybrid cars

The SEAT Mii electric has won Value Electric Car of the Year at What Car?’s first-ever Electric Car Awards.

The award represents a second win for the Mii electric, which also won Best Small Electric Car Under Ł25,000 earlier in the year at What Car?’s coveted Car of the Year Awards.

In particular, What Car? praised the Mii electric for its excellent ride comfort, competitive price point, good real-world range and impressive driving dynamics.

Steve Huntingford, Editor at What Car?,
commented: “The Mii Electric can go much farther between charges than most rivals, plus it handles well and is surprisingly spacious and comfortable for such a tiny car. Given that all of these strengths are combined with a bargain price, it's the ideal first step on the electric car ladder."

Starting at just Ł19,800*, the Mii electric is one of the most affordable electric cars on the market, making electric vehicle ownership even more accessible.

Despite its low price point, the Mii electric still benefits from a single, fully-loaded trim which includes metallic paint, fast-charging (DC at 40 kW), Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition and parking sensors.

The Mii electric offers an impressive 160-mile range (WLTP) and can be charged from 0-80% in under one hour with a DC rapid charger.

    • All-new Superb iV picks up the brand’s first award for an electrified model
    • Judges praise the Superb’s remarkable practicality and low running costs
    • Superb iV available with four trim levels plus hatch and estate options

The ŠKODA Superb iV plug-in hybrid has been named Hybrid Estate of the Year at the inaugural What Car? Electric Car Awards. The Superb iV was the brand’s first electrified model when it joined the range earlier this year, and marked the start of an electrified product programme that will transform ŠKODA’s product range in the years to come.

Although the Superb is no stranger to the winners’ circle, this is the first award for the electrified iV plug-in hybrid model. Commenting on What Car?’s decision to name it as its top choice, Editor in chief Steve Huntingford said: “We’ve been big fans of the Superb Estate for many years because, to put it simply, it represents ŠKODA at its very best by offering class-leading space and practicality for a very affordable price. And this is a trend that ŠKODA has continued with its plug-in hybrid Superb Estate iV. If you have the facility to charge both at home and at work, that could be enough to effectively make the Superb a very luxurious electric car for commuting.”

The ultra-frugal Superb iV is available in four trim levels: SE L, SportLine Plus, L&K and SE Technology for fleet customers. The Superb iV was the brand’s first electrified model when it joined the range earlier this year and combines a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine and ...

    • Assembly underway of engineering prototype for world’s first pre-war Continuation Series
    • Bentley Blower ‘Car Zero’ components come together for the first time
    • First ‘new’ Bentley Blower in 90 years
    • Multitude of skilled artisans across the country deliver exquisite handcrafted components made to original drawings

Assembly of the first new Bentley Blower in more than nine decades has officially started in a bespoke Bentley Mulliner workshop. ‘Car Zero’ is the engineering prototype for the Blower Continuation Series, a run of 12 meticulously engineered, hand-crafted, supercharged 4˝–litre Bentleys built to the unique design of Bentley’s own 1929 Team Car developed and raced by Sir Henry ‘Tim’ Birkin. The 12 cars together form the world’s first continuation series for a pre-war car, and all have been pre-sold.

The first parts in the workshop are some of the most important. First to arrive was the chassis for the car – the backbone of the entire project, to which almost everything will be attached. The fuel tank and radiator were next, as work was completed on the ash frame for the body. The first pair of headlights was delivered, while the mechanical aspects of the first car started to come together – the very first engine (complete with remade Amherst Villiers supercharger), the front axle assembly and the leaf springs.

As the 12 lucky customers choose the colour and trim specifications for their cars, the engineering team is working hard on assembling the running prototype in time for its unveiling ahead of a development programme later this year. Following a piece-by-piece disassembly of the #2 Team Car owned by Bentley ...

Bentley is offering a ground-breaking new Three-Dimensional Wood rear door trim for the first time, launched today for the all-new Flying Spur. Three-Dimensional Wood is a world-first for the automotive sector – a striking, diamond-shaped pattern enhanced with a three-dimensional surface finish machined directly into the wood.

The new option is one of the unique veneer choices from the Bentley Mulliner ‘Collections’ and forms a contemporary luxury design statement, bringing tactility to the natural beauty of wood. Each rear door and quarter panel is handcrafted from a single block of sustainable American Walnut or American Cherry timber, in a harmonious marriage of traditional skills and modern technology.

The concept for 3D-machined wood was first shown in Bentley’s EXP 10 Speed 6 concept car at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, and received wide acclaim. The distinctive feature was inspired by the form of leather used for the diamond-quilted areas in Bentley’s Mulliner

The new features are part of a raft of upgrades added to the ŠKODA Connect service, with iV owners now able to perform a range of actions to simplify the charging and management of their electric vehicle.

One of the highlights is motorists can now check the charge level of their vehicles’ lithium-ion battery before embarking on a journey, and if needed, can give it an extra bit of charge using solely the power of their voice without having to physically intervene.

For the function to work, customers simply need to ensure their charging cable is connected and use the command “Alexa, ask ŠKODA, I want to start charging my car.” Similarly, the “Alexa, ask ŠKODA…” command can be used to control all of the new features added to the Alexa skill.
