    • Four years after I.D. concept, ID.3 arrives with UK customers
    • Hotly anticipated, limited-run ID.3 1ST Editions are now with owners
    • ID.3 is delivered completely carbon neutral, as certified by TÜV Nord

Volkswagen has celebrated a significant milestone, as handovers of the ID.3 1ST Edition have commenced. The first limited-edition cars were handed over to British customers on Friday evening. The ID.3 introduces the brand’s third era, and democratises electric mobility after the original Beetle – the People’s Car, which took mobility to the masses – and the Golf, which brought innovation and luxury to the motoring public.

At Volkswagen retailers up and down the country, deliveries of the revolutionary ID.3 1ST Edition commenced on Friday evening, with the first customers collecting their cars. The Grand Handover event saw these initial cars handed over to early adopters of the ID.3, who had been on the waiting list to receive a 1ST Edition car.

The model was previewed in 2016 as a visionary electric concept intended to go sale this year. The production car stays true to the roots of the concept, delivering the promises of long ranges, technological innovations, intelligent connectivity and an engaging drive.

The ID.3 is produced in Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant in the east of Germany. The Zwickau factory is entirely powered by renewable energy, with many third-parties in the supply chain also using green energy. Where carbon emissions are unavoidable, for example during shipping, CO2 emissions are compensated by supporting internationally ...

    • New light solutions for the first electrically driven SUV
    • Light: LED matrix headlights with daytime headlights and headlights that greet before the drive starts
    • 3D LED tail light clusters: new technology for extremely homogeneous light

The ID.4 boasts a powerful and sporty, but simultaneously also likeable character. The exterior lighting plays a major part in this: it forms an integral part of the electric SUV’s design concept and stages the vehicle in a new way.

Until now, whenever automotive designers wanted to draw attention to highlights, they often used chrome details and strips – on the inside and outside. For a few years now, the trend has additionally been moving towards new light elements in the vehicle interior, but most of all on the outside of the vehicle. “Light is the new chrome,” Klaus Zyciora explains as the Volkswagen Group Head of Design and former Head of Volkswagen Brand Design. “Light plays a major role, especially for an electric vehicle. It represents energy and electricity, but also warmth and safety. Light is a perfect symbol for the mobility of the future.”

Zyciora and his team applied this philosophy to the ID.4, creating a new, unmistakeable light design. Large headlights dominate the front end of the electric SUV to lend it a friendly look. They already largely feature LED technology as standard. The tail light clusters have been fully equipped with light-emitting diodes and a red light strip connects them to each other. The exterior mirror housings feature an additional light element: they conceal logo projectors which project a diamond-shaped pattern, ID. models’ typical ...

Furthermore, it comes with plenty of new assistance systems and advanced infotainment. Available with an efficient petrol or diesel engine, or one of two alternative powertrains in the UK, the new-generation OCTAVIA is also significantly more sustainable. The Octavia e-TEC is the first ever ŠKODA to feature mild hybrid technology. The Octavia iV and the sporty Octavia vRS iV are modern plug-in hybrids. • With the launch of the T4 three decades ago came the arrival of Volkswagen’s first van with front-wheel drive
    • With around two million units produced, the T4 led Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles into a new technical era

30 years ago, Volkswagen’s realignment of its commercial vehicle range was a paradigm shift: in September 1990 – after production of 6.7 million T1, T2 and T3 models with the engine at the back – a new era of front-engine vans began with the launch of the T4. For the first time in the history of the Bulli now only the front axle was being driven. Modern in-line engines with regulated catalytic converters replaced the venerable old boxer engines. Ahead of its launch the company had invested over two billion marks in redeveloping the Bulli. It would turn out to be a good investment.

In September 1990 – just a few weeks before East and West Germany again became one – Volkswagen delivered the first new T4 models to its dealers. As Europe grew together again, the switch from rear- to front-wheel drive also saw everything change on the new T4: the design, the suspension, the engines and the space on offer. Above all at the back, where on the T3 the boxer engine still needed its space, much more room was now available. The new drive system and suspension layout moved the van's performance even closer to that of a passenger car. Volkswagen also significantly improved the crash characteristics of the completely new bodywork.

The extra space made the range more versatile

For the first time, Volkswagen was now offering the van with two different ...

    • New EA211-series 1.0 TSI petrol engines now feature an ultra-thin plasma coating instead of cast-iron cylinder liners
    • Low-friction coating reduces fuel consumption, emissions and weight in the new EVO-generation three-cylinder engines
    • 28.8 million euros invested in plasma coating equipment at the Mladá Boleslav plant

ŠKODA AUTO has put a new processing line for plasma coating into operation. This technically innovative concept allows conventional cylinder liners to be replaced with a powder coating that measures just 150 μm (0.15 mm). This will now be used when producing the new EVO three-cylinder engines from the EA211 series and will reduce internal friction. As a result, the 1.0 TSI EVO petrol engines will be even more efficient and boast even lower emissions. ŠKODA has invested a total of around 29 million euros in preparing and converting its Mladá Boleslav-based headquarters.

Christian Bleiel, Head of Component Production at ŠKODA AUTO, highlighted, “The technically highly innovative plasma coating makes our EA211 TSI EVO engines even more efficient. It reduces friction losses and thus also fuel consumption. What’s more, this type of coating also allows heat to be more evenly distributed within the cylinders and helps it to dissipate more efficiently, thus optimising the thermal load. We produce the plasma-coated engines at Mladá Boleslav in three shifts and are installing them in the Fabia, Scala, Octavia, Kamiq and Karoq.”

This means that the engines featuring plasma coating are also used in ...

    • New 1.0 TSI e-TEC mild hybrid (mHEV) joins the Octavia line-up
    • 110PS unit features 48-volt Li-ion battery and belt-driven starter-generator
    • Allows engine to shut down without compromising other systems
    • Available in two trims with prices from Ł23,005 OTR

The new fourth-generation Octavia range is set to expand again with the addition of a new, highly efficient 1.0 e-TEC engine. The new unit, which is equipped with a seven speed DSG gearbox as standard is the brand’s first mHEV or mild hybrid powertrain and is available in two trim variants from Ł23,005 OTR.

At the heart of the e-TEC powertrain is a powerful 48-volt Li-ion battery and a combined belt-driven starter-alternator. The 48-volt system means that the new Octavia can coast with the engine completely switched off for extended periods, with the electric motor maintaining power to essential systems like the car’s power steering. The mild hybrid system can also recover energy during braking and store it in the battery and support the combustion engine by providing it with an electric boost. A direct current converter (DC-DC) converts the voltage from the 48-volt battery to the 12 volts required for the vehicle’s electrical system.

The e-TEC’s hybrid technology further enhances the efficiency of the Octavia’s 1.0 TSI engine. This 110PS three-cylinder unit is already packed with innovation and features a lightweight aluminium crankcase and pistons. The connecting rods are so well balanced that the engine doesn’t require a balancing shaft as ...
