    • Wayne Griffiths: “In 2021 we aim to double last year’s sales volume”
    • ‘Born’ confirmed as the name for CUPRA’s first all-electric model, due in 2021
    • World premiere of the Formentor VZ5 – the ultimate expression of performance thanks for a five-cylinder engine

CUPRA is charging into a new era of transformation that perfectly combines electrification and performance, starting with plug-in hybrid variants of existing models and continues with its first ever all-electric model, the CUPRA Born.

CUPRA President Wayne Griffiths kicked off the event by stating
: “CUPRA has surprised everyone in these three years and has even continued to grow during the pandemic. These great results make us optimistic to push harder in 2021; this year we’re looking to double the sales volume of 2020 and reach a mix of 10 per cent of the company’s total volume.”
Since its creation in 2018, CUPRA has exceeded all expectations by selling 65,000 units and growing at a double-digit rate. Following the launch of a new product range, CUPRA has accelerated its growth and in January 2021 became the fastest growing brand as well as achieved its second consecutive monthly sales record.

This success was driven by the introduction the Formentor, the first vehicle designed by CUPRA, for CUPRA. Today the line-up was expanded with a new five-cylinder petrol engine, the CUPRA Formentor VZ5, a limited edition model with 390PS of which 7,000 units will be produced (all left hand drive).

    • Dynamic and agile Tiguan R is available now, from Ł45,915 RRP OTR
    • 320 PS performance SUV completes 0-62 mph sprint in 4.9 seconds
    • 7-spd DSG and 4MOTION four-wheel drive follow classic R formula

2021 marks the first time in its 13-year history that the Tiguan, the best-selling SUV across the Volkswagen brand and Volkswagen Group globally, has been given a stand-alone performance model: the Tiguan R. This athletic SUV, which produces 320 PS and is bestowed with Volkswagen’s latest 4MOTION R-Performance Torque Vectoring system, is now available to order for UK customers, priced from Ł45,915 RRP OTR.

The Tiguan R is powered by Volkswagen’s highly-regarded EA888 evo4 four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. In this guise it produces 320 PS and 420 Nm of torque, enabling 0 to 62 mph acceleration of 4.9 seconds and a limited top speed (where permitted) of 155 mph. The Tiguan R matches its T-Roc R stablemate in these figures, and is just two-tenths of a second behind the Golf R on the 0 to 62 mph sprint, proving the versatility and flexibility of the R brand.

The R’s winning formula of a sophisticated 7-speed DSG transmission, muscular petrol engine and 4MOTION four-wheel drive are bolstered by the new R-Performance Torque Vectoring system, which distributes power to all four wheels. The system not only manages this between the front and rear axles, but also between the two rear wheels. Up to 100% of available torque can be directed to the rear wheel on the outside of a bend, which leads to noticeably more agile handling and eliminates understeer. ...

    • Technology uses infrared sensors, cameras and algorithms
    • Knowing precisely where drivers look allows SEAT to create more intuitive and safer interactions with in-car technology

SEAT is using the latest in eye-tracking technology to enable its engineers to make driving more intuitive and safer in the future.

The Barcelona-based manufacturer can track a driver’s gaze using eye-tracking glasses which use infrared light sensors, high resolution images and a sophisticated algorithm to pinpoint exactly where the driver is looking when behind the wheel.

With the road ahead being the primary focus for drivers, the technology helps engineers design cabins which allow drivers to safely locate and operate technology on the centre console – including the infotainment system – and steering wheel at a glance.

The SEAT Smart Quality team is piloting the technology with the aim of improving the safety and the driver experience of future models by obtaining precise information about human interactions with its vehicles.

Bentley Motors today announces a three-year research study that aims to revolutionise the sustainability of electric motors. Supporting Bentley’s commitment to offer only hybrid or electric vehicles by 2026, the result could see recycled rare-earth magnets used in selected ancillary motors for the very first time.

The study, titled RaRE (Rare-earth Recycling for E-machines), intends to build on work completed at the University of Birmingham in devising a method of extracting magnets from waste electronics. Furthermore, the project will scale up this process and repurpose the extracted magnetic material into new recyclable magnets for use within bespoke ancillary motors.

Adding to the sustainability benefits that RaRE will provide, the bespoke motors created through this method promise to minimise complexity through manufacture while supporting the development of the UK supply chain for both mass production and low volume components.

Commenting on Bentley’s research ambitions, Dr. Matthias Rabe, Member of the Board for Engineering, Bentley Motors, said:

    • 145 PS motor makes ID.3 even more affordable

The Volkswagen ID.3 Pro is available to order now, bringing the multi award-winning electric hatchback’s entry price to Ł28,670[1] – and, in turn, further answering the affordable and sustainable e-mobility brief set out by the I.D. concept of 2016.

The Pro electric motor option is available across the ID.3’s Life, Business and Family specifications, and offers a second, 145 PS power output in addition to the introductory 204 PS Pro Performance version. Despite the different motor output to the Pro Performance models, the impressive range of the ID.3 remains the same, with up to 263 miles available on the ID.3 Life Pro from its 58 kWh (net) battery capacity.

In Pro guise, the ID.3 produces 145 PS and 270 Nm of torque – a 15 Nm advantage over the 1.5-litre, 150 PS TSI unit found in many petrol Volkswagen models. This is delivered, as per the rest of the ID.3 range, via a one-speed gearbox, with the car’s full torque output available from a standstill – a virtue of electric vehicle powertrains. This translates to a 0-62 mph sprint in 9.6 seconds.

In Life specification, the ID.3 Pro starts at Ł28,670[1] – with a Ł1,320 step-up to the ID.3 Life Pro Performance. The ID.3 Pro’s charging performance remains unchanged, which means that the same speedy 35-minute recharge to 80% capacity at a 100 kW CCS Direct Current charger is achievable.

ŠKODA has released the first preview of the fourth-generation Fabia. The silhouette image teases the new proportions of the small car, which is based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit MQB-A0 for the first time. This platform enhances the interior space and supports the use of state-of-the-art assistance systems and connectivity features. The world premiere of the new ŠKODA Fabia is planned for spring 2021.

With the changeover to the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Transverse Toolkit MQB-A0, the ŠKODA Fabia is larger than its predecessor in all dimensions. For example, the boot volume, which was already one of the FABIA’s highlights, has grown by a further 50-litres. Thanks to an even more rigid body structure, the MQB-A0 also brings further improvements in passive safety as well as the option of installing numerous modern assistance systems, which were previously only available in higher vehicle classes.
