    • SEAT wins fleet contract to supply the Italian Polizia di Stato and the Carabinieri
    • Fleet to be Leon 2.0 TDI 150 PS; extensive special equipment with armour protection
    • Major international growth in fleet business for the SEAT brand

SEAT has won the fleet contract to supply new Leon cars to the Italian police forces, Polizia di Stato and the Carabinieri. The first 206 vehicles have already started being handed over, with an initial 106 service vehicles being delivered to the Carabinieri and a further 100 to the Polizia di Stato. Overall, the contract includes the option for up to 4,000 vehicles over the next three years. So far, they have taken orders for 925 cars, split between 475 “panthers” (Polizia di Stato) and 450 “gazelles” (Carabinieri).

This marks the first time that both police forces have tendered and selected the same brand and the same vehicle. Major factors in this decision included the Leon’s low fuel consumption and emissions figures, as well as its high quality and excellent total cost of ownership – all core competences of the SEAT brand.

“We are honoured by the trust given by the Italian police in SEAT and the Leon. And we are very proud to be able to contribute thanks to reliable, secure and high quality vehicles to public safety,” says Jürgen Stackmann, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SEAT. “The contract is also a good example of the great success and major growth of the SEAT brand within the fleet business sector.”

Idris Elba attempts to break the UK Land Speed Record.

In the last episode of the four part series, Idris Elba: No Limits, the actor attempts to break the record set in 1927 by Sir Malcolm Campbell. Campbell originally set the record in a Napier-Campbell Sunbeam Bluebird at Pendine Sands in South Wales; covering the standardized distance at an average of 174.244 mph. Sir Malcolm Campbell was internationally famous. In 1935, he became the first person to drive an automobile over 300mph, averaging in 301.377 mph in two passes at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Idris began his training in a highly modified Audi RS6 Plus (fitted with uprated wheels, tyres and brakes and a stripped out interior, replaced with a roll cage) at Rockingham Race Circuit. A Bentley Continental GT Sport was then used for the UK Land Speed Record attempt.

Ari Vatanen mentored Idris, preparing him for the speed and difficulty of driving on soft, wet sand. Ari began his career in 1970, making his first appearance at the World Rally Championship in 1974. Between 1980 and 1985 he secured ten victories in the World Rally Championship Series.

Throughout the programme; Idris has tried to tackle various motoring sports, often for the very first time. He completed the Circuit of Ireland Rally, competed at Coventry Air Show and drag raced at Santa Pod and Texas Motorplex.

Famous for his roles in Luther, The Wire, Thor and now a confirmed cast member of the new Star Trek film Star Trek Beyond, Idris Elba has always been a confirmed petrol head. In the show, Idris states he’s ‘addicted to speed’. Aren’t we all, eh? ...

A new Golf for the racetrack: Volkswagen Motorsport is developing its first racing car based on the seventh-generation Golf. The production-based, 330 PS concept car is assembled in accordance with TCR regulations and is intended to help Volkswagen evaluate a potential customer racing programme from the 2016 season onwards. In order to accelerate the development of the car, the new Golf will be tested under competitive conditions between now and the end of the season: as cooperation partner, the Liqui Moly Team Engstler will run two cars at the eighth round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

“The newly created TCR category provides a promising platform for customer racing – on a national and international level. With exciting races, production-based technology and reasonable costs, it offers a new outlook for private racing teams,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “When developing the Golf-based concept car, we are able to fall back on the resources at Volkswagen. This reduces both development time and costs. We will also use the rest of the season to test the car under competitive conditions and evaluate a possible customer racing project from 2016.”

Dynamic appearance: new Golf epitomises racing genes

Visually, the racing genes are clear to see on the Golf developed by Volkswagen Motorsport: 18-inch racing rims, a chassis roughly 40 centimetres wider than that of the production Golf, and a striking rear wing give the Golf a ‘ready-to-race’ look and first-class handling. An aerodynamically designed front splitter and carbon rear wing are also among

Volkswagen is preparing to delight automotive fans at the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed on 26-28 June by showcasing four new cars, all of which are making their UK debuts. These are the Sport Coupé GTE Concept, the XL Sport and the Golf R400, as well as the 2015 Polo R WRC rally car.

The Sport Coupé GTE Concept made its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. Combining an exclusive sports car design with a four-door body and a glass roof extending into the tailgate, it marks the beginning of a new design era for Volkswagen. Under the bonnet the Sport Coupé GTE utilises a plug-in hybrid drive, combining a TSI petrol engine with two electric motors.

The XL Sport turned heads when it was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014. Developed from the Volkswagen XL1, the world’s most energy efficient production car, the XL Sport is a super-efficient concept sports car powered by a Ducati Superleggera engine. The two-cylinder Ducati V2 engine produces 200 PS and the XL Sport has a top speed of 168 mph.

The third concept on display on the Volkswagen stand will be the Golf R 400 which debuted at the Auto China show in Beijing in April 2014. Based on the standard Golf R hatchback, the R 400 concept ups the ante considerably, with 400 PS and 450 Nm of torque – plus looks to match the performance.

The Polo R WRC is of course not a concept, but a very real car which has seen action across the globe in the World Rally Championship. This model won the WRC last year

The ŠKODA Fabia showcased its strengths as an emergency response vehicle at the National Association of Police Fleet Managers Conference (NAPFM) this week.

The 2015 What Car? Car of the Year, ŠKODA Fabia, has found a new vocation in law enforcement. ŠKODA showcased the Fabia as a fully liveried police car at the event in Telford. Now in its 42nd year, NAPFM is one of the largest emergency service fleet events in Europe and caters for police, fire and rescue and ambulance vehicles.

This was the first glimpse of Fabia in police livery since ŠKODA was reappointed as an approved Crown Commercial Services supplier. The new framework now includes ‘Lot 7’ emergency service vehicles.

Sitting in the beat car category, the ŠKODA Fabia certainly lives up to its recent billing as 'Best Small Car' at the 2015 Fleet News Awards. With a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, six airbags and an autonomous braking system as standard from SE, the Fabia provides proper protection for those who serve and protect us.

The model displayed, the Fabia Hatch 1.4 TDI 90PS SE, would perfectly suit the rigours of life on the street, with its 83.1mpg combined fuel consumption figure meaning it can theoretically remain on patrol for over 800 miles on a single tank.

Some 10 Fabia 1.4 TDI 90PS SE models were taken away from NAPFM this week by emergency services customers for extended three-month road tests. Speaking at the NAPFM Conference, ŠKODA Emergency Services Technical Sales Manager, Steven Cowell,

Audi and the RAC have officially set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title by driving to 14 countries on a single tank of fuel. The unmodified Audi A6 TDI ultra chosen for the challenge comfortably exceeded its official 67mpg-plus potential by averaging a remarkable 75.9mpg and completing a total of 1158.9 miles without the need for a fuel-stop.

Motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson drove the A6 TDI ultra almost non-stop for nearly 28 hours from the Netherlands to Hungary, passing through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.

Commenting on the new record, Jon Zammett, Head of Audi UK Public Relations, said: “By covering so much of Europe on a single fill-up, we have proven that real-world economy of almost 76 mpg or more can be had from the latest engine technology. Audi UK launched its all-new RS 3 Sportback at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb where 79 years ago Hans Stuck competed in the 16-cylinder Auto Union Type C and Hannu Mikkola took Best Time Of Day in the Sport quattro in June 1986.

Audi's history with the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb made the venue the ideal place to launch their 367 PS RS 3 Sportback which focuses on pure sports positioning and dynamics.

Held over two days, the RS 3 tackled the famous hill climb, the oldest motor sport venue in the world still on its original course, with journalists getting a rare opportunity to test the most powerful production 5-cylinder engine in Audi RS history.

With over 20 cars available in different specs and colours, the hill climb allowed drivers to experience the car to its full potential including the faster shifting gearbox and faster reacting quattro drive.

Drivers were also able to follow a road route from the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, giving further opportunity to test the car on the open road.

Mark Constanduros, Commercial Manager for the Midland Automobile Club said: "This was a wonderful opportunity to welcome Audi back to the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb. With their history it made the venue a very fitting place to launch the RS 3.

"It was great to see their heritage cars on display and other RS models available for test."

Also available were other models from the RS range including the 560PS RS 7 Sportback and RS 6 Avant, the 450PS RS 4 Avant and the 340PS RS Q3.

    • The world’s best luxury sedan praised for being ‘as enjoyable to drive as it is to be chauffeured in.’
    • Flying Spur enhanced for 2015 with suite of new features and colours

Bentley’s Flying Spur has been named Best Luxury Car in the 2015 Telegraph Car Awards.

The result, which was announced at an event in central London today, was decided by members of the public who voted for their favourite cars via the Telegraph’s Motoring website.

Kevin Rose, Bentley Member of the Board for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, commented: “Bentley is the most successful luxury car brand in the world. Every Bentley is handcrafted by our skilled and dedicated team in Crewe, which makes each car a true luxury possession. Steve Huntingford, Cars Editor at The Telegraph, added: "The latest Flying Spur manages to feel both traditional and modern, plus it's as enjoyable to drive as it is to be chauffeured in. It's easy to see why Telegraph readers and our panel of judges rate it so highly."

    • Stylish new model offers even more room and even better value for money
    • Prices start from Ł19,840 with first deliveries expected in September 2015
    • Significant increase in standard equipment and technology across the range
    • Seven engines from launch with power outputs from 120PS to 280PS
    • DSG and 4x4 transmissions available on selected models

ŠKODA has announced UK full pricing and specifications for the all-new Superb Estate. The new model is available to order later this month with the widest range of engine, transmission and trim level options ever offered to buyers of ŠKODA’s flagship model. First UK deliveries are expected in September.

Just like its hatchback sibling, the new Superb Estate will be available with seven engine options and the option of DSG automatic and 4x4 transmissions on some models. The engine range consists of four TSI petrol and three TDI diesel units with outputs ranging from 120PS for the 1.6 TDI to 280PS for the range-topping new 2.0 TSI engine.

The range consists of five trim levels: S, SE, SE Business, SE L Executive and Laurin & Klement, with each offering higher specification and equipment levels than comparable models in the current line-up. Despite this impressive increase in specification across the board, ŠKODA has managed to make the new Superb even more affordable with the new 1.4 TSI S model available for Ł19,840 – just Ł25 more than the outgoing S model.

At 4856mm long and 1,864mm wide, the new Superb is 23mm longer and 47mm wider than its predecessor, while the 2,841mm wheelbase is 80mm longer, allowing for greater space within the passenger compartment. The boot is 27 litres larger than before, at 660 litres, expanding to a cavernous 1,950 litres with the rear seat backs folded. Despite the increased size, the new ŠKODA Superb Estate is up to 75kg lighter than its predecessor, thanks in part to weight-saving measures made available by the car’s advanced MQB construction.

The new Superb is also brimming with new technology and the brand’s acclaimed Simply Clever features. Designed and engineered to make the new Superb safer and more comfortable, the new features include a Virtual Pedal system that opens the boot with just the wave of a foot under the rear bumper and full integration of Apple and Android smartphones via SmartLink.
