    • SEAT is joining over 1,250 exhibitors at this year’s Techno-Classica show for vintage, classic and prestige vehicles
    • The SEAT 1430, arguably the most complete Spanish saloon of its time, heads to the show in Essen, Germany
    • The grandfather of today’s Leon ST Cupra, the SEAT 1430 Especial 1600 Familiar, will take to the stage
    • SEAT’s gorgeous 850 Sport Spider will be on display, a car unique in the brand’s long history

Once again, SEAT will be part of Techno-Classica, the renowned world show for vintage, classic and prestige cars in Essen, Germany. At this year’s edition, the Spanish carmaker is showing the variety and diversity of its history with some of the most popular vehicles to have driven off the brand’s production line.

Two versions of the 50-year-old 1430 – a first series saloon and a more powerful estate – as well as a gorgeous example of the 850 Sport Spider – the only convertible SEAT has ever developed which also turns 50 this year – will be on show.

The SEAT that brought greater refinement to saloons: the SEAT 1430

The SEAT 1430 was released in 1969 and so marks its 50th anniversary in 2019. It was a 124 derivative, a unique Spanish model which can be considered the most complete Spanish saloon car of the time. The 1430 is easily recognisable by its twin-headlights, (the 124 always had a single headlight), and bigger tail lights, while under the bonnet was a 1,438cc, 70PS engine, (10PS more than the standard 1.2-litre 124).

Although the design of the 1430 was very similar to the standard 124, the simple modifications to the lights and the bigger, more powerful engine were enough

    • The most popular family van in its segment has been manufactured by Volkswagen Autoeuropa since 1995
    • This multivariable van is available in 33 markets

Today, the millionth Sharan rolled off the assembly line at Volkswagen Autoeuropa in Palmela since production started there 24 years ago. Its safety, space utilisation and sliding door concept continues to impress families and long-haul drivers around the world.

Nowadays, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) dominate the roads but at the beginning of the nineties, it was the multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) that triggered a real van boom. The Sharan has remained one of the most popular vehicles in this segment to this day. But the Sharan has not only been successful in Europe, but also as a top-of-the-range business van in Asia. Currently, the multivariable vehicle is available on a total of 33 markets, with Germany being one of the main markets.

The family-friendly Sharan impresses with its huge variability and particularly good space utilisation. The current generation offers numerous new safety features as standard, making it one of the most advanced vehicles in its segment. The Lane Assist lane keeping system and the Front Assist area monitoring system are installed as standard. Front Assist warns when you are driving too close to the vehicle in front and intervenes by applying the brakes within the system limits.

Executive class Audi S models newly adopt TDI power bolstered by a 48-volt MHEV drivetrain and ultra-responsive electric compressor

    • Performance, presence and comfort – S6 Saloon, S6 Avant and S7 Sportback
    • An impressive 700 newton-metres of torque thanks to combination of electric powered compressor, 48-volt primary electrical system and V6 TDI engine
    • S model design: sporty look and sophisticated pedigree
    • Available in mainland Europe and the UK in the summer

For the first time the executive class Audi S Series models are welcoming TDI power into their ranks – the new Audi S6 and S7 join the recently reinstated SQ5 in offering a torque-rich V6 TDI engine that fully delivers on the promise of the red rhombus-backed S badge but is also in it for the long haul. Thanks to an electrically powered compressor working with a 48-volt primary electrical system, the new MHEV models combine characteristic TDI economy with exceptional throttle response which can be fully exploited with the help of S sport suspension with damping control, dynamic all-wheel steering and the option of ceramic disc-assisted braking.

“Torque kick” – electrically powered compressor and 700 Nm of torque

An impressive 700 newton metres (516.3 lb-ft) of torque available across an engine speed range of 2,500 to 3,100 rpm is the ideal basis for compelling performance in the new executive class S TDI models. They take the very successful configuration of the SQ7 TDI to the next level by pairing an electrically powered compressor with a 48-volt primary electrical system for the first time. This takes the 3.0-litre V6 TDI’s total power output to 350 horsepower, which is transmitted via the eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission to the quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Ever ready: the electrically powered compressor

The electrically powered compressor (EPC) delivers high starting performance. As well as very vigorous acceleration, the electric supercharger ...

    • Since 1974, a new Golf has been ordered every 41 seconds
    • With 35 million units sold, Golf is the best-selling Volkswagen
    • Production of the Golf I started at the Wolfsburg plant

The Golf, the most successful European car, is turning 45. On 29 March 1974, the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg officially started production of what would become its best-seller. Back then, nobody at Volkswagen had any idea that the successor to the legendary Beetle would end up selling more than 35 million units all over the world – and still selling to this day. In purely mathematical terms, a new Golf has been ordered somewhere in the world every 41 seconds, every day, without interruption, since the start of production (SOP) 45 years ago. That is an average of around 780,000 vehicles per year.

Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of Volkswagen: “The Golf is at the very heart of our brand. It stands for progress and technology like no other car. For example, the Golf made safety technology affordable for millions of people for the first time. Thanks to this, it made its mark on an entire generation.” Brandstätter went on to emphasise: “For seven generations, the Golf has made a contribution to the development of Volkswagen as a brand and as a group – into one of the most important automotive producers in the world.”

Dr. Stefan Loth, Plant Manager at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg: “In 1974, our employees were facing the challenge of switching from the Beetle to the Golf. Since then, we have consistently continued to develop our main plant and today, in addition to the Golf, we produce the e-Golf1), the Golf GTE2), ...
