smoking sharan

Just obtained a 51 plate sharan with 150k on the clock, 1.9 tdi 6 speed. It is smoking like mad hot or cold the smoke is grey in colour it doesn't smell like oil so i am presuming it's diesel. Would it be a injector issue or maybe the turbo. I don't mind changing the turbo if it fixs it. Somebody else has said it could be the egr valve! So any advice would be appreciated.
