I have an Audi A4 avant 2.0 TDi 170 (2008) with 20k miles. Whilst on holiday in France (not hot weather, but cool) the gearbox/clutch started to whine, with a dry bearing or clutch release bearing type noise. It was continuous and sounded like a dry bearing although when I depressed the clutch the release bearing was also noisy. I visualised a long recovery home, but after about 20 minutes the noise disappeared. However, it did it again, although briefly a couple of times. Anyone any ideas before i contact Audi , as I would like to get it sorted whilst it is under warranty. Is this a common fault?

yes the flywheel bearing rubs on the input shaft causing damage to both

You need to catch up with Crasher first

Similar problem over here, really loud rattle when depressing the clutch. Got roadside out, they said dual mass flywheel and OK to drive.

The noise had gone by the time I got to the garage, but they've had the gearbox out now and said that is indeed the problem. Flywheel being replaced now..

31k miles for me.

My A4 Allroad with 9,700 miles on the clock is haveing a new clutch today...symptoms some juddering on release and the pedal travel was stiff around the biting point with a slight wire at idle....

Not good out of warrenty...God I hate dual mass clutches.

These clutch issues are scaring me. I think I'll stick with my original plan of getting a car with at least 2 yr warranty left!

Correction Audi rang to say it isn't having a clutch and they all do that!!!!

Apparently me and the dealer mechanic not thinking it is right isn't enough and someone at Audi HQ knows better.

Should be an interesting chat with them tomorrow when I pick the car up.
