Can any one please tell me what BHP my 1998 audi a3 is its a 1.8t 5 v im new to this site so please bear with me

Welcome aboard, I'm a newbie too :) - you'll no doubt find like i have that everyone here is friendly and helpful. According to Parkers, its 147bhp - although you might get a more sure answer in the Audi section further down the forum front page.

Its the much higher torque from a diesel engine that makes them feel quicker. Many people get bogged down simply by the bhp figure, without taking into account the other factors.

I must admit, my newly acquired Passat 2.0TDI would give the 2.5 V6 petrol Jag X-Type that I had a run for its money. I reckon the Jag was quicker off the mark, but once rolling I reckon the Passat would show it a clean pair of heels. Its definitely quicker in the 50mph to 70mph sprint.

Doubt very much that I'll ever return to a petrol now.

I can't help - beyond my level of expertise - however now that your thread has been moved here to the Audi section, I am sure that some of the experts will help.

Just bought a 96 A3 1.8l with the same Q's. Hope you get some answers ;) Save me bogging the forum down with same q's.

the answer from an audi dealer is mine is 150 bhp

Your standard jobby is 150,the gold one in my profile album was 190(tweaked), the earlier S3 was 210 and the later 225.
With a bit of fiddling by the right people the 1.8 turbo 5 valve can make 330.
When I say later S3 I don't mean the 2.0 models, they start at 265.
I believe in the TT you get 150,180 and 225 with the same 1.8 as referred to above.
When I say a bit of tweaking I probably mean a lot and a good few bob.
