I've just taken ownership of my first diesel - a July 2009 Jetta SE 2.0 TDI 140 PS with 15000 miles on the clock. My previous VWs were both 1.6 petrols from new - a Golf for 3 years and a Bora for 9 years.

I'm not a high mileage driver (max 10000 a year) and with the petrol VWs I didn't worry too much about oil as the level never really changed between services. Reading the forums here, it seems I can expect my TDI to use oil and to have to top up regularly between services.

From reading the manual it seems I should use different oil depending on whether I have a diesel particulate filter installed i.e. VW505 or VW507. How do I tell if I have a DPF installed and what oil should I use e.g. is the higher spec 507 okay in both and the 505 only for non DPF, or does 505 have to be used in non DPF and 507 only in DPF engines?

Thanks.

Gavin

I have an 08 Jetta (same spec as you) and I use 507 spec as that's what VW used. I have the old PD unit though. I assume your will be the newer CR unit. Don't know if that makes any difference. There might be a sticker on the engine cover telling you what to use.

Yes it is the common rail unit. I had a look under the bonnet but see no sticker stating the oil type - only Castrol oil recommended, but not the specific type. I guess I'll ask the the VW dealer.

I had the same questions when I took delivery of our Jetta during November 2009. It has the 1.6CR Tdi and I was advised by the dealer that all CR Jettas have a DPF and require 507 oil as anything else would damage the DPF. Having said that, 6000 miles covered and the dipstick still at the max which I didnt expect as my previous PD engined Jetta usually consumed 0.5 litre every 1500 miles. Still check it weekly just in case!!

Enjoy your car - the Jetta is the best kept secret of the VW range IMO!!!!:o

Hi,

Not all CR TDI Jetta's are DPF!!

Give the reg number to your dealer and they will be able to tell you.

The CR engines are really good and don't burn hardly any oil and I've done 20k in 8 months.

I've had my remapped by the VW dealership and the 140 bhp is now 185 bhp and goes like stink!

Thanks for the replies. Decided to go for the highest VW 507.00 spec oil and bought a 1 litre top up of Castrol Edge 5W-30. I believe this is OK for all TDI CR engines whether they have a DPF or not. Hopefully it won't use too much oil - 1 litre cost £16.50!, although I didn't shop around for best price.

I will check with VW dealer the exact spec of engine.
