Hi

Just privately bought a Touran (06 black SE 1.9) with 39,000 miles for £8,000 which I thought was good considering how form the market seems to be.

It's fine apart from cruise control which only works for 5 minutes after start up, after which the light goes off and of course it does not work unless I turn the engine off and back on.

I understand that those are the possible causes:
- faulty switch in one of the pedals
- faulty stalk
- rear brake light/bulb (that confused me).

If I get my local indy to run a VAG COM fault finding diagnostic, will that precisely pin point the source of the issue ?

Thanks a lot.

Well in order of cost would suggest a new pair of good quality (Osram?) brake light bulbs first although like you I cannot see what that has to do with it I have seen it suggested on here before
Vag.com/VCDS readout will hopefully throw up a helpful code - if it's a brake or clutch pedal switch then it should show up but a faulty stalk may just be seen by the system as you turning cruise off and not see it as a fault - on my Alhambra if you touch the brake or clutch pedals cruise (quite correctly) but the light stays on so perhaps that points to a faulty stalk or wiring

I was the one who discovered that replacing the brake bulb fixed the unreliable operation of the cruise control, which is still fixed.

Previously the garage had tried all the electronic testing and thoroughly cleaned switch connections to no avail.

I recently talked over the miraculous cure with the mechanic. He also was sceptical but suggested that it was more likely that in replacing the bulb I had moved the wiring so that an unwanted earth contact was 'removed'. Go figure.

Hi Guys,

I had this on my 54 plate Touran a couple of weeks back.

All i had to do was remove the controls from the stalk, clean the contacts on the slide switch and remount. Everything worked continuously and didn't drop after that. (Once i had put the connector on the right way up that is....)

I have pictures on how this is done as i took them for future ref. ;)

email me on: andrewburniston@googlemail.com if you want the pics.

Quick update for those who like shiney pictures...

Pop the stalk in half, this can be done with a small screwdriver or finger nails if your behind on your trimming:

Once the stalk is apart, the PCB and switches come free as the float between the 2 halves. Disconnect the connector at the end of the PCB. (REMEMBER WHICH WAY UP THE CONNECTOR IS!)

Crack out the T8 torx head screwdriver and undo the 2 screws holding the buttons to the PCB section.

In this last pic you can see the 2 parts. I cleaned both the connectors with a small amount of cleaning alcohol on a cotton bud (americana: cue-tip)

Once I cleaned up the connectors I followed the reverse of above, hold the switch end down (toward the ground) when replacing the PCB to ensure the switches dont fall in the path of the microswitches on the PCB.

If you forgot to notice the way round the connector was when you put the switches back I think mine the connector on mine had the flat face pointing to the back of the stalk.

If you get stuck I'm contactable on email still andrewburniston@googlemail.com

Andy,

You're a star !! I still haven't been bothered fixing it as my indy just wanted to change the stalk entirely.

Will have a go this weekend.

A MASSIVE thank you in the meantime...

Nick
