View Full Version : Annoying Noise after opening door

I have a 3 door Golf S TDI, and recently when I unlock my doors and open the drivers side, there is a strange mechanical whirring noise coming from the drivers side. I can't tell if it comes from the front or back but it only lasts about 2 seconds?
Does anyone have an idea of what it might be? It doesn't happen every time, only when i have my doors locked for a bit.
Thanks

I have this too, I think it is something to do with the interior lights, some sort of mechanical dimmer control, but I am not sure.
I can only hear it if the car is in the garage, when parked outside it is so quiet I cant hear it.
But I agree it is quite strange and I have never had a car that did it before.

Mine is pretty loud but thats probably because i am looking for it when opening the door, but it dissapears before i get the chance to shut the door and find out where it is coming from.
Doesn't seem like its anything to be worried about then

Hi
This noise could possibly be the fuel pump arming itself to make sure it has fuel to start.

Unfortunately I don't live on a quiet road. I have a 5dr hatchback and can't say I have noticed anything but there again haven't been looking or listening out, especially.

No it won't be by just opening door. ;)

If it happening only on the drivers door opening after unlocking the car its the fuel pump priming the system it will only happen once so if you close the door then open it again you should not here the noise.

I noticed this ages ago, but suspected that it was, as above, just the fuel pump arming (or something) as it only happened when the drivers door opened.
Logical, really, that the car would get ready for the driver...

I get an annoying noise after opening ANY door on my car but ONLY if the wife is already inside.

Sorry to disagree with you Keith. The fuel pump won't prime by only opening the drivers door. It primes as the igntion is turned on. This is how all injection systems operate. It would be against health & safety and VW never do that if you read the handbook. ;)

I was going to say that when I first read this post.

Funny thing ! I have the same noise in a Ford Focus, might be time for a change lol.
Sorry, I can't help with the whirring puzzle because I've only ever sat in a golf that once I test drove a Tsi.
I have a whirring noise that presents on engine shutdown in my Focus but that's down to the power steering spooling down but I often tell car buffs that it's the turbo....they always believe me....lol

Yes that is a problem with all turbocharged engines. These poeple that always rev the engine up before they turn it off (usually boy racer types). Turbochargers can spin up to 90,000 rpm not at idle but they still spin fast. As soon as you turn the engine off the oil pressure stops to the turbo, this doesn't do any good for its service life. I'm not sure if they say something on this point in the handbook, I haven't read it in detail. ;)

Correct

Correct
Incorrect, it shouldn't prime while you open the friggin door. :zx11:

Yes a wirring noise sounds like the pump is priming. What I'm saying it shouldn't do that while opening the drivers door it doesn't say you're going to start the engne. When I locked my old Rover the other door wined as the central locking activated. ;)

Hmnn...For all the scientists here this does not seem resolved yet ;)
How about elimination: 1) does it happen when any other door is opened or is just the drivers door
2) does anything happen after ignition?
3)Lower the window shut car ; reopen via fob; without opening door switch on igntion -is it the same noise..
etc... :)

1. Just the drivers door - I've tested this out already
2. The car starts :)
3. Dunno....

Hi
I asked the master tech at work bout this noise and he confirmed that the noise is the fuel pump arming as a convenience and will only do this around every half hour.

noticed it for the 1st time on mine this morning when scraping the frost off the windscreen (yes - don't you just love global warming!)
can't say I found it that annoying - but it did seem to come from the the vicinity of the fuel tank
Incidentally the 1st door I opened was the front passenger one to get the scraper out of the glovebox - no noises then - only when I opened the driver's door to start the engine
my vote is defo for the the fuel pump
