A3 ABS Problem

my August '98 A3 1.8T sport has recently shown the ABS light on dash at any speed above about 12mph, but only intermittently. local garage diagnostic shows " 01276 ABS Hydraulic Pump V64 signal outside tolerances". garage thinks this may mean replacement of pump ( part only = £1082!). any comments/suggestions before i go further? Brilliant car apart from this, want to hang on to it, but not if its going to start costing ££££s like this! :1zhelp:

i went and found the same part for an audi 1999 A6 in a passat at the scrapyard this morning.
